Advantages: Original, atmospheric
Disadvantages: too hard
Homeworld is a good game. it isn't a great game, but a good one. Homeworld is a RTS in full 3D, that is, it's a space version of command & conquer where the attack can come from below and behind! I found the interface difficult to get to grips with. Using the formations and tatics were time consuming, and having to switch too and from the big map to tell my units to go any subsatantial distance i thought was intrusive. The levels were difficult, there is no difficulty setting, and it would appear that the default is hard. This made for a exciting game to begin with, as you had to battle tooth and nail to just stay at "not dead" status. However, this soon bacame tiresome, and when you thought you stood a chance, the enemy would introduce you to a new weapon that you had no defence for. I found that the only way you could possibly win was if you knew what was going to happen next, and prepare for it. I think this spoiled the game as the "surprisies" either wiped you out quickly (not much fun), or they weren't surprises (boring). However, despite it's faults, there is a good game in there. The atmosphere is top notch, and in few times i managed to survive the surprises, i felt i had done something worth while. Perhaps if the interface was a little easier to get to grips with, i would have a different opinion of this game.

- 21/04/01 Sorry, after all that i never told anyone what the game was about. It's an RTS in full 3D. This means that you can be attacked from bellow and behind. That is why it is somtimes difficult to defend your self (no bottle necks to put you units so they are spread about thinly or risk not having ANY units where the attack comes from) |
