I bought this game after completing the theme hospital game, from the look of the game I thought it'd be the same thing with some new levels.
It was similar, the idea of the game is the same to build and improve upon ready built hospitals by placing new rooms, equipment, decor and managing staff. You have objectives to meet including curing a certain number or percentage of patients and earning a set amount of cash but there are plenty of issues in this game.
The game is set around a TV drama and you follow the story in between each completed level you get a new episode of the drama which shows mysterious happenings in the hospitals and romances and arguments between the staff. This aspect of the game isn't that good, not only is the story not very interesting but it is just like a really bad cartoon, I don't feel that this aspect of the game adds anything to the gameplay and see it as a poor effort to make the game in some way different from Theme Hospital.
When I first started playing, I thought it would be good, you have a choice to play in story mode or sandbox. Sandbox isn't a challenge, but an open ended free play to create a hospital however you feel. I find this mode boring and prefer to have some aims so went for the story mode. There are 12 levels in the form of 4 episodes in 3 series' of the TV show.
The first couple of levels weren't bad, but from then on I found them all to be far too similar and not very hard. I don't like games which are impossibly hard, but this wasn't challenging at all so it was just boring. In one level in particular I was sat down just waiting for patients, I ended up leaving the game running and doing some house work and when I returned I still had only a handful of patients. I decided to use a search engine to see if there was something I was supposed to be doing to attract patients or something and it turns out it's actually a glitch in the game! I restarted that level and I did finally complete it but I have seen in forums that people have just got stuck on this level no matter what they have tried and therefore can't open any more levels, making the game a complete waste of time and money for them.
I managed to complete the game, this took me a few days as I was only playing it a little each day, but I think if you wanted to you could probably complete this easily in a few hours.
I wouldn't recommend this game, if you have played Theme Hospital you will be really disappointed with this, if you haven't played either game I would advise you to spend your hard earned cash on the real thing and not this poor imitation.
The only positive about the game is that I think children may like it, due to the fact that it isn't challenging they might be able do to it without the boredom adults would experience.
If you would like to ignore my advice and try it for yourself you can buy the game on the internet new for under £5 new including delivery.
Hospital Tycoon is basically just another of those tycoon games you get for computers that you get to build things and try to make money with. As far as I know, it is only available on the computer and I've never seen a copy of this for any other console. I may be wrong there of course though so please correct me if you know it is available on other gaming platforms.
The cover for this game is an image of a doctor with a nurse on one side and a slightly surprised looking man with a defibrilator in his hands on the other side. The words "Hospital Tycoon" are above this. On the back there is information about the game, including images and system requirements.
The game is said to be suitable for children aged 7+ and I think this would be reasonably suitable, although admittedly some of the scenes may not be suitable, and it might be a good idea to explain to them that these illnesses in the game aren't real. Things like "lightbulbia" for example would be one of these. This is a disease where the patient lights up. I think children would be likely to believe this was real. I probably would've done as a child, anyway.
When you have installed this game, you are given several options for what to do. You can chose to play in storymode where the receptionist, Miss Spelling, guides you through the game and all of the levels and tells you pretty much everything you need to do. For me, this got a little annoying and I decided to see what else was available on the disk because the storymode, while it is great for kids, I feel is a little patronising with the whole "click build. well done! now click on the chair icon. well done! now place the chair. well done!" type of thing that was going on the whole time.
I moved on to the next option instead and this was called Sandbox. This was more the sort of thing I was looking for. It made the game a lot more like Theme Hospital - a 1997 Bullfrog version of the same game basically.
You get to do pretty much whatever you want to do with the hospital. You can hire any staff you want without being told what to do. You can build any rooms you want rather than having to do what Miss Spelling tells you to do. You can choose how much money you have. You can choose which hospital to run and which difficulty setting as well. I think the ability to customise the game more to your liking is very good.
However, one word of warning here, if you choose the easy setting, you barely get any treatments diagnosed for the first half an hour of game play which can be pretty boring when you're limited to very few buyable items. It's not even like you can set up rooms you'll need later because you're not given the things to build until the diagnosis has been made for you to need the item. This can be very annoying because when you've played it a few times you'll start recognising the conditions and want to be able to treat them without having to go through the whole diagnosis process which can take quite a long time.
This game is highly addictive however and you find yourself wanting to play it over and over again. It's a very fun game actually, what with the strange illnesses and all the doctors and staff in general having their own personalities that you can control. You can make members of staff hate each other or fall in love or pretty much anything like that which I think is quite a nice touch as you can't do this in many other games of this nature that I know of.
As for the graphics, I think this is somewhat basic. The characters clearly look like cartoons rather than anything remotely real. Even the machinery tends to look somewhat fake. However, I dont feel this interferes with the game too much. It runs pretty smoothly and doesn't seem to cause my computer any problems so that's all I worry about really. I could see how it would annoy some people though.
The sound on this is basically just the same tune over and over again in the background. The staff seem to have their own language to communicate in but like in the sims, you can tell what is being said or whatever either by images above their heads or by a speech bubble if it's really important that you see what they're talking about.
The price for this is £3.38 on amazon at the moment and while it is a good game, I don't think it should be that much because it's not got the best graphics and the actions can get repetitive. Story mode isn't even brilliant, in my opinion. Sandbox makes up for this though.
Overall, I would give this game 4/5 because I think the price is a little high and the graphics could be improved. The music gets a bit repetitive in the background and I feel that the story mode could have been significantly developed. The game is fun and addictive though so I dont feel I can deduct more stars than this.
I was impressed with this game for the price I got it for because it was very cheap. However, there are many factors such as the graphics that I thought was quite poor. The graphics are very simple and they are quite low res which I thought really limited the overall feel of the game. The gameplay however, is very fun and it is a very addictive game to play! I really loved how there was a huge variety of different things you can purchase. For example, you can buy all sorts of different medicine and expand your hospital which is just great I thought!
I also really liked how sometimes there are tense situations at the hospital because it made the gameplay really realistic. I thought that the difficulty was quite good because it is at times challenging which was a good point. You even have to update the facilities and check machines are operating correctly which I thought was just ideal for a game like this. I would really have liked there to be an online mode which would have been great for playing with your friends. The interface of the game I thought was very colourful which I really liked and the soundtrack to the game is also very suitable.
Overall I thought that the game was well produced and I would really recommend it. I felt that the game had simplistic gameplay but this is a positive factor because I really found it so easy to pick up and start playing.
Hospital Tycoon is a game in which you are running your own hospital and have to ensure that you can cope with any illness which comes through the doors. The first thing I loved about this game when I began playing was that you have to firstly investigate illnesses in order to know what your doctor will be diagnosing...once you have investigated and know what the illness is then you will have a card in a rollodex that tells you the equipment needed to treat the illness and also the staff required which means that as you build your hospital you can check back to the rollodex and ensure you have all of the equipment and staff needed. Another thing that I found very good in the game is that you can customise most things in the game colour wise to ensure that your hospital looks as good as it possibly can. The game should not be looked at as a newer version of Theme Hospital as this is a game of its own and follows a story more so than Theme Hospital did but give this game a chance and it is enjoyable for a while, however after a while the game becomes repetetive and can become boring.
I thought this game would be a more up to date modern day version of the classic game of Theme Hospital. I was completely wrong. This game is great however highly repeitive but yet addictive. The game basically walks you through each level and tells you what to do with a very annoying doctor talking. The game was around £25 in the shops however this was reduced to £10 in game but could be picked up on ebay for a lot cheaper. Unlike Theme Hospital, you cannot build up your hospital and its based more on a story. I have checked other reviews and seems this game isn't highly loved, I am a lover of sim games and found this game great but boring, could only be played for a few hours and then you get sick of it. I give this game a 7 out of 10 for game play. 5 out of 10 for value and a 6 out of ten overal.
Hospital Tycoon is a medical-themed God game in which players are put in charge of hectic hospital facilities that are constantly on the verge of crisis and collapse. Players are challenged to run, maintain, enhance and expand the hospitals while turning any chaotic situation around using ingenious management techniques.
