[REWRITTEN] Released in March 2001 Hostile Waters immediately won many fans. Unlike alot of recont new games Hostile Waters really feels like the finshed product and not some rushed release to get the makers some money. Where to start is the question. One of the games strongest points is its depth of gameplay, its not only one of the most entertaining and adrenalin pumping games of last year, but it is also a game that is challenging mentally too. Yes you have to use that thing in your head, your brain. An example of this leads me into the next point. The vehicles. You have to build and 'control' every vehicle in the game. First you ... It’s difficult to be all things for all people. As anyone who has attempted to transform themselves into a dancefloor guru after seven pints would attest to, and usually ends up in misery for all concerned – not least the people who have to suffer your drunken thrashing and flailing. Hostile Waters is one piece of art that doesn’t imitate life however, and sacrifices none of it’s broad, innovative values to appeal to just one sect of gamer. Hostile Waters is an almost unique type of game. It crosses the strategy elements of say, Starcraft, with the relentless action of a tank simulator or helicopter sim. The only other games that I can think of that do something similar were both Battlezone games. While the first Battlezone game in particular was a good game, Hostile is much, much better. The premise is like this: You control a single, giant carrier. Using the carrier’s on board “creation engines” you can build a variety of battle units, which can be roughly subdivided into air units (helicopters) and ground units (tanks, recon vehicles, hovercraft). When you build one of these, ... Read the complete review

I've bought some RTS games in the past that got great critical acclaim. Recently I got Homeworld : Cataclysm which looked beautiful but I couldn't really get to grips with. Even following the tutorial, I don't really understand what's going on? Hostile Water is very different in that you play it as an action game, either from an overhead, isometric style map viewpoint, or controlling vehicles from a great 3rd person view. The story is simple but workable..war has ended and peace reigns. A couple of ex-generals decide to start a new war to take control of the planet, and you are brough in to relearn the art of war. You start with a ... Read the complete review
