“ Genre: Strategy „
Jagged Alliance 2 is one of the best strategy games ever made, yet criminally remains largely unknown to all but die-hard fans of the genre. Borrowing heavily from the once excellent Xcom series, JA2 mixes micromanagment with turn based tactical combat, requiring you to hire, fire and command a rag tag group of mercernaries, all with their own individual characters, attributes and skills, the aim of the game being to carry out a coup against the sadistic female dictator of a little known pacific island.
The original game was almost totally non-linear, allowing you to pretty much go where you wanted throughout the island, whereas the game's add-on pack, Unfinished Business, requires you to follow a linear path through numerous enemy-occupied sectors, and the resource management aspect has been played down to an extent as well. Essentially, unfinished Business concentrates on the tense and exciting turn based gun-battles that made the original so addictive, and whilst a more stripped-down gaming experience is nevertheless immensely entertaining and considerably more challenging than the original.
The plot sees you again leading a team of mercenaries, this time against a hostile government on a rival island that has managed to get its hand on devastating long range missiles and is threatening to blow the island you spent so long conquering in the original to smithereens. There are less sectors to play through and the game is shorter than the original, but there are new graphics (including snowy terrain), new weapons (submachineguns, assault rifles, pistols etc) and a few new merc characters to hire and control.
Unfinished Business is a great add-on pack that adds yet further to the almost unending longevity of the original JA2, and is an essential purchase for JA2 fans.
