Advantages: lots of activites

Disadvantages: your child will not want to come off the computer!

A few months ago my son was taking a very big interest in the computer, he was using the cbeebies website a lot with help but what I noticed was he was either bored with the games or he found some of them too hard so either his dad or I were landing up playing the games for him!

I decided to start looking around for some computer games and spotted Jump Ahead in Pc World.
Jump Ahead pre-school is fantastic as it has so much to do for the little ones it is educational and fun at the same time! My son has been using this Pc game for around 5 months and in that time he has learnt his numbers which his nursery teacher is very impressed with.

** System Requirements**
Windows 95/ 98 / Me/ 2000 and XP , this game will not run on Vista!

Once you have installed the game just click the little icon and away you go. You will see a school house, a seesaw, sandpit, and flowerbed. Click on the schoolhouse as the others don`t do much.

You will be asked to type in your name and then click on the door knob you are then taken into a classroom that wow has so much to do!

There are 10 activities, each has 3 levels and you can usually choose letters, numbers or shapes. In every activity there is an animal like an elephant, cat, or koala bear who tell you what to do.

**The Classroom**

In the classroom you will see a big window, numbers, letters, a painting easel, bus, book, bin, fishbowl, noticeboard, dot to dot and so much more!

I am not going to go through all the games as there are so many of them but here are a few.

***Dot to Dot***

In this game you have to connect the dots or letters in sequence, so obviously you either begin with 1 or A. There is a koala bear who is on the top right corner of the screen, he will say "what comes after 1?". If you click on the right number or letter the little dot will turn red and a line will appear, if you are wrong a line or red dot will not appear so you keep trying until you get it right. Once you have finished a beautiful picture appears.

**Clean up Time**

In this game there is a bin and lots of rubbish is all over the grass, the bin will say "please feed me a bottle" and also written on the bin will be 1 bottle. So the idea of course is to find the bottle and put it in the bin. Then the bin will say " find me 2 paper bags" or find me "3 sweets" again this is also written on the bin. When you have put all of the rubbish in the bin the lid comes off and this funny character who is in the bin starts clapping!

** Paint A Picture**

You can paint a picture by numbers, letters or shapes. On level 1 there are 2 paint pots and all you have to do is click on the paint pot and the cat will tell you to paint all of the 6`s or all of the A`s. Then when you have finished that colour just put the paint pot back and click on the 2nd pot, once you have finished painting your picture an animated picture will appear.

**Favourite Song**

Here you will find a choice of 4 songs :-

* I`ve been working on the railroad
* You are my Sunshine
* Incy Wincy Spider
* I'm s little teapot

All you do is click on the song you want to hear and the lyrics will appear with the music, the lyrics turn red so that you child can follow the song.

**Progress Report**

This will show how well your child is doing on each game and is very useful, it was by me checking this that I found out my son had learnt his numbers!

** How do I quit the program?**

I could not work this out! So my son showed me a stop sign, you click that and it exits the game.

** What do I think?**

This is a fantastic game which my son loves, he is learning and playing at the same time, he does find some of the games way too easy but he still has fun playing them.
By using this game my son has learnt to control the computer mouse really well, so well in fact that he no longer needs my help! He can also switch the computer on, turn the computer off properly and type his name.While playing the games he is also learning phonics, shapes, sounds,colours, differences and words.

There is so much to see and do that I really want to recommend this game as your child will have hours of fun but learning at the same time!

None of the Jump ahead series will run on Vista - I think it is because it is such an old game x

My son had this ( although it was an earlier version), think I enjoyed playing it more than him at times :-)
