Advantages: immersive universe, outstanding graphics, diverse weapons, believable plot, heart-stopping finale.

Disadvantages: bullet time regenerates too fast.

Max Payne 2 is a revolutionary PC game released in 2004. It follows the story of Max Payne, an NYPD detective troubled by the murder of his wife and child, and the conspiracy he uncovered in the original game, which takes place two years in the past.

The game is described as a 'film noir love story' with outstanding graphics and physics. The game has really explored the notion of 'bullet-time' (slowing down time to show off max's moves) since the first game and now more shootdodges and special moves are available.
One thing that cheapens the bullet time experience however, is the fact that it can be used constantly. In the first game, bullet time could only be regenerated by killing enemies, but in MP2, it regenerates quickly over time, meaning it can be used over and over.

The graphics have not dated at all, and everything still looks very, very nice when played in high resolution.

Although conversations take place throughout the game, the main story is once again carried by graphic novel-style sequences with still photos and voice overs. There is a much wider range of weapons, including assault rifles, automatic shotguns and ridiculously, dual Desert Eagles!

Levels include used car lots, burning apartment buildings, a funhouse, and the depths of Max's psyche.

The dream sequences are not used as effectively as in the first game and are certainly not as eerie. They are however, an effective plot device and give an explicit impression of what Max is going through.

The Havok 2.0 physics engine is fantastically understated, the subtlety of its use makes it feel like a real universe, and not just a vulgar showcase like in games like Half-Life 2.

There are also a few extra modes which have been a favourite among fans. In addition to 'New York Minute' mode, in which the player is timed to finish a level, there is also 'Dead Man Walking' in which the player is placed on a level with no exit, and must survive for as long as possible, later trying to beat that record. An alternative ending can be unlocked by completing the game on hardest difficulty.

Also for about a quarter of the game, the player controls Mona Sax, (I thought she was dead!) Max's love interest and catalyst for most of the plot.

We also see the return of many characters from the first game, including Vinnie Gognitti, Vladimir Lem, Alfred Woden and Jim Bravura.

This game is outright excellent and is obviously a labour of love. It has lost none of its playability value as it has aged and is utterly re-playable.

Summary: One of the best sequels ever made,
