Of the cluster of cheap NBA on N64 titles here, this has to be the best, and (in UK stores at least) is probably the second best anywhere next to the Live 2000 instalment of the series. The only real difference though is the presence of a guy called Jordan on the latter version (his first console apperance since the pretty dire Rummble in the Windy City, or something like that. Whatever it was, it stank, and was a long time ago). So if Jordan is that important to you, spend the extra 45 pounds, but maybe he'll be on a new one soon with his second return from retirement for this season.

Okay, lets forget Mike, and get back to the game.
Visually, it's a treat, from in-game play to replays with close-ups better than any nasty square footballers we've all got used to.

The controls are really well thought out. Too many games seem to make it all too difficult to pull off advanced moves, but the emphasis here is definitely on basic simplicity for new players combined with logical control systems to use more complicated stuff later on. This makes it a great game for those who don't know too much of the game, but also has everything the seasoned baller wants.

Other options, such as offensive plays (sequences of player movements organised for the attacking team to make opportunities) can be turned off, set to auto, or specifically selected, depending on how well, if at all, you know them, though some explaination or diagrams would have been a good addition.

The game, crucially, plays very well. Movement is smooth, controls natural and there is an impressive range of options and play modes, to give great depth.
Perhaps most importantly, it manages to flawlessly accomodate those who don't know the game well, and those expecting a quality simulation. And the learning curve will let you go from one to the other with very few problems.

At this price, there's no reason not to.
