Advantages: Great Community, Completely Free, Multiplatform Win/Linux/Mac
Disadvantages: Still in development.
If you crave a true immersive roleplaying game and not just some mindless run around and press a button to see if you kill your opponent type of thing, then this is the game for you.
To be clear I'm an active player of the game, not a GM or developer. I started playing PlaneShift in late 2006 and immediately fell in love with the game. I will not rehash the game settings and races as those are thoroughly documented on the PlaneShift website (http://www.planeshift.it), but will instead share my thoughts on the game.
Planeshift is first and foremost a roleplaying game. You create a character (or characters) and are expected to play the game in character. The community is very dedicated to this and will chide you for not playing in character. Therefore, if RP isn't your thing stick with WoW. However, if want to play in a rich RP environment, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better than PlaneShift. It's not just good for a free game, it's good period.
While the game is technically still in development, it is extremely playable. In fact, if not for the occasional server restarts to implement new features, most users probably wouldn't notice the development status of the game.
The installation is a roughly 260MB file (bittorrent is available), so I took the time to read through manual while I waited for the download to complete. The documentation team has done a great job of covering everything you need to know to interact with the PlaneShift environment.
Once I created my first character and logged in I immediately found that people were quite welcoming and more than willing to show me the ropes as it were. I've been playing since and having loads of fun.
In short, if you like MMORPG games and with actual role playing there really is no reason not to try this game. It's 100% free to download and free to play. There is no concept of premium content, so there is never anything to pay for.
Summary: The best true role playing experience on the net.
