Populous 3 the beginning is the latest in the series of god games under the title populous. If you can think back along time, almost 8 years you may remember populous 1. It was pronounced one of the best games ever, and was indeed the first real god game to grace the computer monitor. The master at the head of the Bullfrog team who produced Populous was a man called Peter Molyneux, a man renowned now for making great games. Well a sequal and 7 years later, Bullfrog have realeases the third populous. Now without Peter (who has gone on to form Lionhead studios, making Black and White), have a different team managed to come up with the goods to make this Populous 3 a classic? Well in to say its a classic is perhaps slightly over doing it, but its certainly not bad, not bad at all. This third populous turns away from the original two, where you were a god and really had less control over your populus, you casted spells on your enemy, and changed the landscape to aid the growth of your minions. Now it has all changed. Being a prequal to these two, Populous the beginning is different. You are not a god, you are instead a women shamen with a mission to become a god. She has many powers and spells, but she is person who you can actually move and control unlike the two other outings. Also, you can control your minions, such as the braves and warriors and send them to do your biddings. Unlike the former populous' everything is under your control. The graphics were amazing for 98, the year it was released but to say they are now is again perhaps overdoing it. But again they are not half bad. The engine is also amazing and often betters many newer god games released, you can spin the landscape, zoom in and out and even change the tilt of the camera just incase you need to see two things at once. It truly is remarkable. The shamen is your queen if you like, and although she can reincarnate you need to protect her, for without her
your minions really are useless. She can cast a number of spells including: Fireball, lightning, hurricane, swamp, swarm, and the formidable volcano which can ruin a whole village in one go. In all there are 20 spells, an impressive amount. Each of these take a while to charge up, depending and how good they are and who many minions you have creating mana. Everytime you cast a spell you have not seen before you look in awe as it performs amazing feats in front of your eyes. My personal favourite is angel of death, which flies about eating your enemy, like ants destroying houses as it flies along. I looks so cool! Over the 20 or so missions in the single player you gradually build up your knowledge and gain better spells and buildings. However usually you get say one spell or one building every level, which means the learning curve is quite slow and this leads really to the only real letdown which is the amount of men types, you get: braves (who build your buildings and are the foundation of your entire army) warriors (who are equiped with swords and are good at fighting) firemen (who fire fire at enemy at long range) priests (who can convert the enemy) and Spies (who can disguise themselves and blow up enemy buildings) Thats it. I find spies useless so it means that there are really only 4 types of men. This severly brings down the lastability of the game and really does make it less exciting to play. Once you have all of the men, the game starts to get boring. This is the one great letdown in the game. However, if you are looking for another way to play the game, why not play it over the internet. It runs perfectly on a normal 28kb modem and you can play it with up to three of your friends. It really is great fun and me and a few mates seem to end up playing it every week. This game is now out on budget and is really a must have for any god game fan, especially if you have internet connection
and friends with the game. If not it is still worth looking at because it truly is a good god game.

      Disadvantages

"Populous: the beginning" published by the brilliant games company "Bullfrog" was and still is an excellent game. But why then did it not even reach the game charts when it came out, who knows. The fact is that the game as been on sale now so long that it as become a budget title, generally meaning you can buy it for a fiver. When I bought this game just as it was released about 3 or 4 years ago it cost me £35 and I felt that the game was worth every penny. NOW ITS ONLY A FIVER! ABOUT THE GAME This game is a real time strategy (RTS) game with some amazing 3D landscapes. When I first bought the game my PC didn't even have a 3D graphics card and the game still looked great. Now I have and the game looks incredible. I still can't understand why this game was such a flop. GAMEPLAY To complete the game you must defeat all the tribes on all the worlds in the populous galaxy. The worlds are just different levels, which become more difficult as you progress. During the start of each new level you are given a GOD and a small amount of tribes men and women. Your main goal is to defeat the other tribes on the world that you are on. There are many ways of defeating other tribes, including all out war (massive battles), religious convertion etc... Your job is to make your tribe grow and become stronger. You start this process by building some houses (huts). Then send some of your tribe into these huts and after a short time more tribe people are born (created). Having tribe people in huts also creates mana which the GOD needs to make and cast spells. The GOD is the most powerful character on the battle field. If she dies she is brought back to life in a temple of stone rings. However if all the tribe is dead and then she dies she cannot be brought back to life without any other tribe members alive. The range of spells she can
cast is unbelievable and the 3D graphics when you cast the spells are brilliant. Available spells include tornado, storm of fire and mudslides. You earn access to more spells as your progress through the game. All in all there are about 30 different spells available. Once you have a good sized tribe (the maximum being something like 100) you can train your tribe. You do this by building training huts, e.g. by building a bishop hut and sending some tribes people into the hut they will be trained as bishops (holy men/women). Holy men and women are useful for converting other tribes people to become your tribes people. THE BATTLES The battles in populous are absolutely brilliant in full colour over the excellent 3D landscapes, with up to 300 different tribes people all fighting at the same time. THE CONTROLS Generally you only have to use the mouse to control the game environment. Its more or less a matter of selecting the object or tribe person and then giving a command via the mouse buttons. All in all this is an excellent game, which should have made it to number 1 a few years ago. And to be honest you can't grumble at a budget price of a fiver. I would recommend this to any gamer...

Bullfrog have made many other games in the past and almost all of them have been hits. Theme hospital, theme park and theme park 3D are just some of the titles that bullfrog have made. However bullfrog have come up with the new game called populous the beginning. Populous is a 3D resource management strategy game where you build a village train up Warriors and try to defeat an enemy tribe. Populous is set in a special dimension where you are a shamen (a female witch who has magical powers) who must defeat other tribes to gain total victory. Populous uses a unique 3D landscape system which enables you to be up to zoom in and out spin around 360 degrees and see the world that you inhabit. Along with this brilliant camera system are some lovely graphics, the landscape is well animated and so are the buildings. However the creatures and inhabitants aren't that well animated and looked like a 2D pixel trying to fit in two a 3D landscape. As a shamen you have to have spells control, with 26 spells doing good and evil you can manipulate and damage the world and its inhabitants to your own free will. The spells include volcanoes, earthquakes, lightning, storms, tornadoes and many more. With all these spells and a few different units and buildings you can use different combinations to create endless strategies. First impressions of the game and you will be stunned. After about six months you'll be happy with it. After nine months you start to get bored of it, and after a year you'll start to get annoyed with it. There are different skill levels to choose from but this doesn't make you want to replay the whole game, if you manage to get past the extremely annoying level you are stuck on. There is no skirmish mode available so you need to be able to take advantage of the LAN and Internet multi-player modes. With up to four players and a small selection of maps the multi-player mode will add a couple more months to
the playability. I'd recommend this game for people who like lovely landscapes, a good laugh and who don't want this game for life. Remember a game is not just for Christmas its for life. Well not with this one. I advise to take advise of money back guarantees to try this game out, and if you don’t like it then get a refund. This game works good for some people and bad for others. Recommended spec Intel Pentium 200 MHz 32 MB free system RAM 110 MB free hard drive space 8 speed CD-ROM drive supported 3D accelerator card (such as a voodoo, TNT, Savage 3D, a TI rage pro, and most other modern 3D accelerator cards) Minimum spec Windows 95/98 Intel Pentium 133 MHz 16 MB free system RAM 100 MB free hard drive space 4 speed CD-ROM drive mouse For network play unique one CD per computer and a 28.8 kilobytes per second modem or faster Internet connection for Internet play. or a IPX or TCP/IP LAN network with one CD per computer. Unfortunately the Internet can offer a lot of support for this game however there are patches some where out there... perhaps mars. Thanks for reading H@rry

I have just bought this game at a budget price and considering its over two years old I am very impressed. I remmeber spending hours on the old amiga version with its basic graphics and frantic build up the earth and flatten it again to destroy the enemy. This version is light years ahead. You scroll beautifully over a 3d landscape to the sound of grunts, tribal drums and new age music. The elements of all the usual gods games are there. Resource management doesnt seem to be of as great importance as in Age of Empires for instance but there are other similarities with that game, such as preists with thier poewer to convert and the tactical use of guard towers. I have only just completed the first couple of levels but am convinced that I will be hooked for weeks to come, If you like Gos games and particulariliy if like me you have a slighty older machine this is highly recommended.

I have been the owner of the game Populous for a while now and played it many of times and I 100% agree with Dooyoo member TaNK in his Opinion about the game that when you play it over again it can get very boring! Nothing is different!!! The game has a unique and powerful 3D engine which brings you a 360 degree, fully rotating globe complete with curved horizons!! and has 25 levels to complete, but thats all which I can say about the game which is good! Not Recommended!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Populous is great game at first, but then get into the same routine over and over again. It follow the same route that many great games have followed in that they have no real diversification. You can only do so many levels of killing out and enemy in the same way before it becomes so boring that you just give up. Apart from that it is a great game. The graphics are amazing even with software rendering. The music has a bit to be desired as it is the same throughout the game (or I think it is I got to bored with it to see if it was). It does have an addictiveness of sorts. It is one of those games that you think ‘what game shall I play today?’ and you know that there is one game that fill the need and it is it. So you play it for the next few days and discover that gardening is fun after all. Overall it is a reasonable game let down in one critical area: longevity.

            Disadvantages

After reading loads of reviews about this game I decided to buy it and find out how good it really is. I was firstly disappointed, as I thought this would be enjoyable to play and that I would be hooked from the first day. I find myself playing this game only because I don’t like wasting money and I hope fellow gamers reading my opinion wont waste there money. The new follow-ups must be better that this, and I’m sure they will be.

You begin in cavesman era with tribes and each person within the tribe is lead by a sharman. You have to lead your tribe up the levels of power and revolt againest other tribes. There are over 20 spells which you use to destroy your opponants. Over 10 buildings to choose from to build within and house your troops. Tactical play is requires throughout and tests you all the way through the game. The object is to rule the planet. One of the best games I've tried but very time consuming and can get monotonous.

            Disadvantages

This game is really quite annoying because of the weird camera angles which you use.The game in general is quite monotonous, in that although as levels go on you get more buildings etc. (as with every game!!) it continued to bore me.It is a clever game and good idea but i feel that it is a game that you either love or hate, and to be honest it does get on my nerves. The graphics and so forth are good and killing the enemy is mighty satisfying, as with any game again, but i just became too tempted to find a level code and skip levels, which is not what i buy games for!!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

I love this game. The graphics are beautiful, you can rotate the whole globe, and watch the mountains move below you. Watch the detailed sky, with clouds moving on in the wind. The gameplay is easy to learn, and there is a built-in tutorial section which teaches you the basics: casting spell, training warriors, building huts, and fighting the opponent. True, there are only five types of military units in this game, which you might not like after playing a game like Age of Kings for example, but the fighting looks great! And of course, the spells. Only your shaman can cast these powerful spells, so you must guard her with your troops. These spells include drastically changing the terrain, again with beutiful graphics while doing this. There are also attack spells, like lightning, which you can use tokill the enemy shaman or units. There are many more spells, which are very fun to try out. The whole game, in single-player mode, is your journey through different planets to gain control of a galaxy and become... a god! The levels get harder and harder, while giving you new spell to use, and step-by-step introducing the aspects of the game. The computer AI is smart enough in this game to give you a challange, which cant be said for all strategy games. Also, there is a multiplayer mode, where you can play with a friend on two computers (too bad it requires 2 CD's), or you can also play on the internet against other gamers! Summary: if you like a cool strategy game with beautiful graphics and great action, this game is 4 U. Thank you for reading my summary. Brad

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

This was the first game I bought when I acquired a PC and it's still one of my favourites. Not that I was biased, but having worn out two mice on my Amiga many moons ago on an earlier incarnation of the game, I was really hoping this wouldn't be too different. I wasn't disappointed. Firstly it was really easy to get into - I don't like games where you have to learn a degree's-worth of controls and screens to be able to begin to play. And then it was just totally, absolutely and utterly addictive. You build like crazy, you attack some baddies and generally get to be god. Some of the screens are a tad annoying, but cheats are fairly readily available if you get stuck. It doesn't have stunning graphics or sounds - but then I find all that a bit irritating and too much of a distraction anyway. If you're someone who, like me, was a fan of early computer games you'll almost certainly like this. It's not primitive in any way, I should hasten to add, it just doesn't have a load of effects for effects' sake.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Populous:The Beginning is a god game, basically on each level of the game you control a tribe that has to conquer the other tribes on the planet. And as you progress through the levels you get new spells and buildings. I would recommend you play the tutorial, as it is good at explaining the various aspects of the game. Overall, the control method was good, though I did occasionally have trouble keeping track of my people when moving them large distances. I thought the graphics were very nice, the way in which you could fly around the planet and easily zoom in and out of the surface. I also liked the animation of the spells. I enjoyed playing it, but once I had completed it I had no urge to play it again.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

This game starts off well. As far as these types of games go, the gameplay is fairly easy, you don't have to study a manual for hours before you can play it, you can just get sraight on in there! The graphics are quite good and so is th general idea but I found that I got frustrated rather quickly! The game is divided into sections whereby you have a time limit to 'conquer' various worlds. For the first few games this was fine but when I got to about level five I came across a stumbling block. This section lasted for about 15 mins and I just missed out on 'cracking' it by a few seconds, BUT, because I failed I had to start from the beginning of the level again. I then proceeded to miss out again by a few seconds, each time trying a slightly different tactic, but 'just' missing conquering the world. This is where I started to become very bored, playing the same level with the same sort of sequence over and over again. I know the general idea is to try and find a different way of doing things, but I felt I had already 'been there, done that'. I have not bothered to load it since!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

In Populus: The Beginning you get to control a tribe. Led by their shamen their goal is to destory the other tribes in the game. You have a total of 26 spells at your disposal for use as you seen fit. They do various thngs from creating bridges across water to creating a hurricane where you want it to. Many of these spells have to be earned by worshipping totum poles. All of the spells do different things and some you only have a limited number of so you need to use them wisely. You can also build various huts - for example one to procreate or one to train tribesmen into warriors. You can command your tibesmen by click on them and giving them commands though the toolbar on the screen. The controls on the game are fairly easy to master as is the concept of the game itself. The graphics are what you would expect for this type of game but saying that they are quite detailed. The game is not that huge with regards to the number of levels that there are - only 25 different levels. This is its major downpoint is what is otherwise an enjoyable game.
