I am a big fan of PC games of late, and therefore decided to get Pro on my PC as opposed to my console which played all of the previous games in the series. I actually think this game is really good. I have followed the pro series since the beginning, and I really have never felt let down at all.
I would confidently say I am a huge huge fan of football, I play semi professionally, and I would like to think I know alot about the game and how it is played. With this in mind, I think Pro evo 2008 is a pretty realistic game, but whether I can say its more realistic than the previous in the series, im not sure, its on par though, and ive loved them all so far.
In my opinion, football itself is a difficult game to simulate. With this in mind I think Konami have done a decent job. OK its definitely not perfect. You do find yourself frustrated when you see a man and want to pass to him, but now and again the computer goes and passes to somebody else on your team, or to no one at all. But then i think to myself, its never going to be perfect is it? How can you possibly make it so that this game predicts what you want every time, i think its natural now and then for a pass to go to someone else, especially if he is in the vacinity. Agreed it can get frustrating, but I don't think too much can be done about that.
As for the gameplay itself, I think its really good. Some parts of it aren't overly realistic though. The way a player will dribble and move in the game can be quite unrealistic at times, but I think it does a good job overall, especially since I think football is a hard game to simulate, what with so many options you have at your disposal in a real game of football.
The game plays smoothly on the PC, and I feel like I have full control of my players and what they are about to do , alot of the time. This of course is good, but if your looking for perfection in terms of player control - this probably isn't it. But what game is perfect?
Tackling can be slightly annoying because of the way the defender you are in control of moves. He tends to move parallel or at a right angle to, or directly into the player. This is of course due to the fact that pro evo is a game with only four primary directions, forward back left and right. And you can improve by going diagonally between forward and left, forward and right, back and right, etc...
The graphics in the game have improved quite a bit since the release before, and players look more realistic and how they should. Unfortunately the game still lacks so many of the licenses that would compliment it so well, as many people say, FIFA has the licenses, Pro has the gameplay. Well I would take gameplay anyday. But more licensing would be nice!
The menu's in the game seem a bit tacky and over the top at times. I find this the case in the Master League especially. Functionally though, everything works.
The music is awful if im being quite honest. The songs are just random football songs which just make my ears want to bleed, not recognisable songs, and not good sounding either! The actual football noises and crowds and things are Ok, pretty standard, but the crowds could have more variety and do some better chants maybe.
Overall though, I'd say its the gameplay that counts, and for me, the gameplay, although having its flaws, is still very good and quite close to realism. Well as close to realism as games get, but can realism ever carbon copied into gaming? I'm not so sure.
Summary: Realistic gameplay makes this a winner for me!
