After the visually astounding but gameplay-wise rather dull Quake, ID appear to have learned from their mistakes in creating the dynamic, high-adrenaline blaster that is Quake 2. Casting you, yet again, as a square-jawed space marine, the game starts with you having crash landed in the middle of a high-tech industrial city on the surface of Mars, belonging to a race of ugly, cybernetically enhanced aliens known as the Strogg. Your fellow marines have, again, all been wiped out, and it is up to you to cripple the Strogg's defences on your own. Whilst essentially completely linear, Quake 2 does at least give the impression of freedom, its various ... Read the complete review

Perhaps this game can't really be original, saying as it's a sequel, but it was the first game I ever played over a network, and to me is the original multiplayer first person shooter. The original Quake had multiplayer, even Doom did, but few were played on the same scale as Quake 2 was. Perhaps it was because it coincided with the time the internet got popular, or the time everyone bought PC's, or even because it was one of the first games to use a 3D accelerator and it looked great, but for some reason Quake 2 just had the edge in multiplayer. Throughout the years numerous FPS games have been popular with gamers, the biggest being the Quake ... Read the complete review

Quake II is a first person action sci-fi shooter released by ID Software and Activision in 1997. The player assumes the role of a space marine, Bitterman, taking part in "Operation Alien Overlord," a final struggle to save the human race from a vast and deadly alien invasion by a cybernetic humanoid race, the Strogg, equipped with a vast arsenal of mechanical and biological weaponry. This is attempted by launching a counter-assault on the Strogg homeworld, and ultimately defeating their Overlord. Although the game's graphics are somewhat dated, the gameplay itself remains incredibly visceral, ripping through the enemy's flesh with ... Read the complete review

Although an old game, Quake 2, as a multiplayer game, is still doing very well. This is partly thanks to all the mods and conversions created for it that are, even now, very fun to play. The game itself was designed by ID to be a more single-player experience than Quake. This showed by the fact that there were no multiplayer-only maps contained in the original release. They were added on later with a patch. The single-player game was fun to play through when the game appeared, but going back to it now makes it look feeble in comparison to Half-Life. The enemies are well designed and well-animated and for its time, the AI is pretty reasonable. The weapons feel good to ... Read the complete review
