Advantages: One of the best games ever
Disadvantages: You had better be good
First let me just say that I am not a newbie, I’m just not very good at these type of games. That said quake 3 is a very good game. It looks wonderful, and the volumetric fog is quite effective. The characters are extremely detailed and the animation is fluid. After playing the game online, I was annoyed at the amount of lag. I was getting ping times of 300 ms, which made the game more difficult than it should be. Most of the other players had ping times under 100ms. I ended up being chuffed that I was beating someone who had a lower ping then me, and we were the last 2 in rank, out of a game of 24 players. I am rubbish, I admit it, but the ping time didn't make for a level playing field. Another problem I have is that the gap between the difficulty levels on the single player game is I feel, a little too big. E.g. while playing the game on hardcore, I can consistently score perfects (i.e. I haven’t died once) against ranger, but then I get wiped of the face of the earth by Phobos (not even a single frag) on the next level. However these are only minor faults compared to how good the game is. My lack of skill aside, there is a lot of fun to be had from running away from a person who you know is better than you, while also hunting down someone who is even worse than I am. I think that quake 3 is a brilliant game, especially for hardcore first person shooter players.
