Advantages: Good story, Entertaining, Lots Of Weapons

Disadvantages: Poor Multiplayer, No Real Suprises

Return to castle wolfenstein may not be exactly the best original first person shoot em up ever, but this game has somthing about it which is sure to make it a hit with first person shoot em up fans everywhere. It revolves around the " No One lives Forever " engine, that itself was a good game. This one though can be compared to the lights of aliens vs predator and max payne.

Story

The story is that your an captured american soldier in a nazi german castle, you must stop them creating monsters in which they create themselves for the world war. You have been captured, and you have to break free and stop the germans in there tracks. They will create monsters which will break hell on you. These monsters will become indestructable. Along the way you will come across zombies, flame blowing monsters and other creatures you wouldnt really want to bump into on a cold winters night. The levels are very well detailed and there is a variety, there is a total of 27 missions in all. These span from the depths of wolfenstein castle to the graveyards and the catacombs.

The details and lightning in these levels are somwhat superb, I have never really seen maps like this created. The character detail is also superb, German soldiers move how a german soldier would move, their mouths operate in turn with their speaking. Somtimes they even have conversations with each other which is quite brilliant, although the conversations might not be very intresting. The graphics are superb, you will need a top of the range graphics card to get the most out of this game, also you may need a good processor for it to run smoothly. Player animations, cut scenes, levels and textures can all be changed in the options menu to suit you.

The sound effects in wolfenstein are somwhat compelling, never before have i heard so many eerie noises. For instance, when your in the catacombs, y
ou can hear the moans and shouting of the german officers who are being murdered. You can hear drops of water falling about here and there, the Germans shout at you also, which is an excellent added effect. The enemies in wolfenstein are rather clever, when you throw a grenade, they wont just stand there and look it, they will somtimes even kick it back at you. Although the AI might not be the best every seen, it is a big improvement on other games which have lacked in enemy AI.

If your thinking " wow this sounds like a gory game ", then think again, yeah there are lots of shooting and massacres, but very limited blood is spilt. Monsters only crumble and enemies only fall, this may be a bad point to the game if you are a gung ho person, but you dont need lots and lots of blood in a game to make it excellent. This game really focuses on the storyline and its linear maps and sounds, which are world class. The bad points in the game is that really, there are no suprises on the way, its just a straight through shoot em up game, which lacks in excitment near the end levels. They could of done a lot more to make this more intresting, and added a few suprises. The multiplayer function is also weak, it has a lot of options but can be very complicated to work, there are only 8 maps to play with which may also be a let down. But i dont think this is a game people will buy to play online, its purely a story only game. If you like first person shoot em ups then you will like this, if your not sure then I suggest you wait for medal of honor: allied assault( which ill be doing an op on soon).
