 Rise of the Triad: Dark War (PC)
 Rise of the Triad: Dark War (PC) ... Task-force), is sent to San Nicolas Island to investigate deadly cult activity taking place in an ancient monastery. Their boat, the only way back, is destroyed by patrols, and the team soon learns that the cult plans to systematically destroy nearby Los Angeles. The operatives, now unable to return whence they came, are then left to fight their way into the monastery on the island, and eventually put a stop to the cult's activities. Rise of the Triad was initially, during its early stages of development, meant to serve as the sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, titled Wolfenstein 3D II: Rise of the Triad. Enemies perform combat rolls to avoid being hit, and when woundeded will sometimes fall to their knees and beg for mercy, at which point you are encouraged to finish them off execution-style as otherwise they will fall to the ground and play dead before getting up and returning fire once more.

Released in 1995, Rise of the Triad is a first person shooter that was originally intended as an expansion pack for Wolfenstein 3D, hence the presence of nazi enemies and an mp40 machinegun, but was eventually developed into a stand-alone game instead. You can choose to play as one of several characters, all of which have different mixes of attributes (health, speed, accuracy etc) and can employ a range of weapons including a pistol, machinegun, and various rocket-launchers, which cause enemies to disappear in an explosion of gore with eyeballs and other internal organs flying past your field of view.
