I doubt it - and I speak with some authority, too, as someone who’s actually completed the game twice: once for review and, ‘cos I liked it, once to write a complete solution. Second time round, it seemed significantly less magical, and rather more - how can I put it? - tedious. ...more

Premium Review Riven (PC): A journey into the unknown!! (180 words)

I eagerly purchased Riven after having played Myst previously. As with Myst the music and the graphics in Riven are astounding!! The puzzles to solve seem more difficult and I still have not managed to solve them all yet. It is definately worth looking at hints and tips on the web when stuck as only the most lateral of thinking would help at times!!!*g* Writing down what you see and work out is essential if you are to have any chance of really moving forward in the game .... This game lures you in ...... I have been known to lose a whole day to its charms so make sure that you have no essential appointments to meet when you get ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Absolutely Stunning...but no thrills (483 words)

Riven is the sequel to Myst - a game which has become something of a classic amongst PC adventure gamers. Basically, for those who do not know, this is another of those immersive 3D adventure games which pit you against a number of difficult puzzles in your quest to find or do something. In Riven the story goes something like this: The evil scientist Ghen has caused Riven to become unstable and has also captured someones wife as well and we must travel there and save the day. Basically the story is weak and not really worth mentioning. So then, surely the gameplay must be superb to cover for such a weak storyline...umm no. In Riven virtually ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Riven (PC): sequels are not always rubbish (183 words)

Riven is not the sort of game I would normally buy, but I must admit, to becoming hooked on this type of program after playing it for a few weeks. The thing about Riven, is that there are no rules. You just wander about, exploring the world that you have found yourself in, solving puzzles as you go. I have to admit getting very stuck on a number of occasions, and having to resort to any number of hints and tips found on the internet, without which I would never have been able to finish the game at all. The graphics are out of this world, and I don't have a 3d card, so I was absolutely amazed at what the programmers managed to do on my pentiun 166 ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review brilliant, stunning gameplay (194 words)

This was the first game I bought for myself and it is still my favourite. The story line is captivating, gameplay brilliant and the graphics stunning. If you enjoy games that tax your mind Riven is ideal, it can be frustrating at times but the sense of achievement when you've solved the puzzles is great. I don't think the Riven experience would be quite as good with a walkthrough guide. Without doubt the quality that made Riven so popular is it's graphics. The makers say this is what the game is all about and they are not wrong. Crystal clear, it's very easy to imagine that you are actually there. The sound effects are also stunning, to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Riven (PC): You will be hooked! (137 words)

When I bought Riven, I hadnt played Myst or any other game like it. One word of warning: If you complete Riven without looking at a walkthrough, you must either be a saint or have died of frustration. When you start the game, you are in a room with a guy called Atrus, he gives you a book, and off you go in to the lands of Riven. The worlds are very realistic, with atmospheric sounds, and some of the sights you see in Riven are truly breathtaking. There are seven islands in Riven, each with lots of puzzles and transportation. If you like strategy games, I would *definately* recommend it. If you do you can find brilliant hints and a walkthrough at the Don't ...  Read the complete review
