Advantages: Rugby game, all teams featured from 1999 World Cup, Stadiums are excellent

Disadvantages: Not FIFA, game play often lets it down

As a rugby fan, I have always wondered why there was never any decent rugby games avaliable on the market. Unlike FIFA games, the rugby games market was limited to Johna Lomu and that wasn't the best game ever produced. But when I saw that EA Sports had launched Rugby 2001 I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

As a Welsh fan, I really wanted to get the Welsh edition, and living in England this proved to be a difficult task - the same applies when trying to get a rugby shirt! However, I found a copy - thinking that the programme would have additional stuff concerning the Welsh team - but nothing was different. Infact all I can see is that Rob Howley was on the front of the box - that's it. However this disappointment didn't spoil my gaming experience.

Rugby 2001 is based on the Rugby World Cup of 1999 - held in Wales. All the teams featured, as well as the players and stadiums are featured in the game. The graphics are very good for this type of game - yet they are not up to the standard of FIFA Games, yet it is better than any other rugby orientated game.

The game allows you to choose oppostion strength, as well as who you can play etc. as you would expect. World Cup, 6 Nations as well as Tri Nations championships can be played, along with freindlies - but is any game a FREINDLY?

Game play is very good and the way you can plan set pieces as well as team setup is very good. However, on the odd occasion, you do tend to find that the odd 'invisible' player is on the pitch and you can run straight through them. matches can be from 6 mins to 80minutes - which gives you a chance to beat the All Blacks - because they are difficult to beat at any strength!

Overall, this game is a great basis for which a series of games could be based, not necassarily on nations, but at club level, as I think this would be more interesting - just like FIFA. I would recommend this game to both fans and anyone who enjoys EA
Sports games because it is value for money and is quite addictive. Thumbs Up then to EA Sports!

To really be authentic regarding the 1999 Rugby World Cup in Cardiff you should have to spend the night queueing at Cardiff station for trains which don't arrive, and then not have your wife talk to you for a week because you dont get home for 24 hours! (Not to mention calling her whilst pŁ$%Łed from a bar full of women!)
