Advantages: very complex strategy/tactics part

Disadvantages: no real-time naval warfare

Shogun: Total War was the first strategy game that really changed the way a RTS should look like. With hundreds of units on the battlefield, rock - scissor - paper combat dynamic with morale and experince system included - it was like my dreams coming true. And the game takes place in feudal Japan, which was and is very unique, exotic and brave thing to do.
In the begining, the player assumes the role of one of seven daimyo - feudal lords. The goal is to unite the medieval Japan and become the Shogun (remember the film?)
The player is first presented with a turn-based strategy phase - a map of Japan divided into provinces where the armies are formed and moved. When two opposing armies are present in the same region, the player has the option of automatically resolve the battle or switching to a real-time tactics battlefield, which is a bread and butter of this game! The engine is so good that it takes in count weather, terrain, unit's freshness/tiredness, formations... It simply rocks! I recommend this game to every wannabe general, because it is (for my opinion) the best one in the series. And, oh, archers can run out of ammo.

Summary: One of the best strategy games ever
