SimCity 3000 (PC)
Advantages: addictive and fun
Disadvantages: once you get the hang of it, its not so difficult
Sim City is a game where you basically build and create your own city.
You play as the mayor, and have to manage all sorts of things like the finances, the building of residential areas and power stations, as well as responding to citizens problems and requests. You start by building roads, houses, commercial areas and industrial zones, whilst at the same time going underground to build water pipes to ensure they get water, aswell as power lines and stations to make sure everyones got power. If you dont have sufficient power/water then your houses wont get filled by people and your shops wont open.
As your city grows your population increases, bringing you in more money for expansion. But you also have to keep your people happy by listening to them and responding to their requests and complaints. Unhappy people means people will move out and you will get riots on your hands!
You are also able to build famous landmarks from cities around the world in order to create your perfect city. In addition to this as you progress through the game you are awarded buildings such as universities (you only get this when you have a lot of schools and alot of sims getting a good education), as well as nucleur power plants, baseball parks etc etc.
You also have to be wary of things such as polution, for example building a power plant might create alot of power and save you money, but the polution could be high and sims wouldnt be happy, causing people to move away and leave your city. You also choose how much tax to charge people for living, schools, fire service, police service etc. Too low and you wont be bringing in enough money, too high and people wont want to live there.
There are several difficulty settings, which changes how much money you start with to develop your city, you can also choose what year you want to start from - 1900, 1950 and 2000. This alters what is available to you such as airports, train lines and different buildings etc.
There is also the natural disasters option which you can switch on and off. When left on you will be randomly hit by disasters such as fires, earthquakes, tornados and alien invasions - all of which can have devastiting effects on your city.
It can be quite difficult to get the hang of it first, but once you get the gist it becomes very easy to get your city set up and people moving in. This doesnt stop it from being highly addictive though, I spent many hours of my life building cities on this game and helping them grow.
Sim City 3000 is definitely the best from the series, Sim City 2000 lacked the graphics, and 4 just didnt feel right and wasnt as addictive as 3000. You can pick up this game very cheap now as it is quite old, from the couple of quid in second hand games shops to a few pence online on websites such as amazon - and it is well worth this price! Definitely recommend this game!
Summary: great city building game
