Advantages: cheap, easy to play, get to blow up your city
Disadvantages: not enough challenge, sound
Sim city 3000 is one of the latest in the clever sim city series.
Its a city creation simulation, From Maxis (The people behind The Sims)
Your main role is to create a city and make money.
This game is viewed from an isometric angle, Which can be rotated or zoomed to get a better angle of the game that you are playing.
You begin the game with an empty map with lots of space to create your own city.
Along the bottom of your screen are some options to zoom/rotate the map. There is also a News ticker that is constantly moving, This gives you any news that you might need, For example if there arnt enough schools etc this will tell you.
Up the side of the screen are some icons that you use to create zones, Build schools, Power stations etc.
there is also an icon to meet your advisors who will help you on many subjects.
The main icons that are available are Zones, This is where you can select your main areas to be built, For example you can buy some residential zones that will be built into houses and flats.
You can get commercial zones that will be built into Shops and offices.
Industrial Zones are the factories and warehouses that a lot of your sims will end up working.
You need to get a nice balance between these zones as the more people that live in your city the more jobs that are going to be needed etc.
You can also select zones that will be used for landfill, to get rid of unwanted garbage.
Seaports and Airports become available as time passes.
Obviously the sims will want to travel between their homes and their jobs etc. This is where the Transportation Icon is used, Here you can buy roads and railways. Later in the game you can also buy subways and bus stops, These help to cut down on the traffic if your having a problem.
So far so good, Your city has lots of roads and buildings but No Power or water supply, Thats no good is it! This Is where
the next Icon is used, Utilities, This icon is where you can purchase a power plant to keep your sims in the elecric age. You can also build water pumps and pipes. As the time progresses you are given more power plants etc.
Great, the city is up and running, But so are those robbers that have just stolen your Tv and set fire to your house, and guess what, Weve got no Police or fire station, Well this is where the next icon comes in handy. Civic Buildings, This is where you can buy Police stations, Fire stations, Parks to keep your city looking nice, Hospitals so your sims dont all die, Schools and other educational premises.
The last icon is the one to meet your Advisors, This is where you can get to find out how well your city is actually doing, You can look at the budget, Set up ordinances that help clean up your town or cut down on traffic etc. There is also a lot of information here for helping to create your first city, This area tells you everything about anything thats involved with the game.
As your city builds up you may find that your neighbouring cities would like to do deals with you, Sometimes they havent got enough power and would pay you to supply them with some, Thes deals are a great idea but always read the smallprint or you might lose a lot of money if you fail to meet their demands.
Sometimes you will get offers from an outside company that wants to place something in your city, For example an high security prison, As before this could make you very rich but thats no good if all your sims want to leave the city.
The gameplay is very realistic, In some universities they actually use this game for buisiness studies as its got a very close to life buisiness model.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND
I'll start with sound as this is normally the main thing i hate with games, And this game hasnt changed that, The music is all fairly pleasant but it gets very repetative. The so
und effects are quite good, Lots of cars and people, It sounds like a city so its quite addiquate for this game. There is also an option for ambient sounds and this is the option i usually use, This is a bunch of sounds such as wind etc. It doesnt grate at you like some of the annoying tunes and is just enough to keep you in the atmosphere.
Graphics, Well they are quite nice, Nothing spectacular, But with this sort of game you dont want amazing top end 3D effects. All of the buildings look fairly realistic and when you zoom into the city you can see lots of little people moving around in cars and on foot, It all just adds nicely to the atmosphere of the game.
EASE OF PLAY
Well this game can be very easy to get into, There are no levels or ways to complete it, All you have to do is build the best city that you can. In a lot of ways this is one of the things that brings the game down a bit, Once youve built your city thats it there isnt much more to do.
Sim City 3000 is available at around 5 - 10 Pounds that is a fair price for a game that will have you coming back to it for a long time to come, There are lots of options and you will create some spectacular cities. But for some people this wont be enough, If your after a game that you can actually complete then dont look here, This is more of a design tool than actual game.
Also if youve got Sim City 2000, Then id still buy this but dont be expecting too many changes, Its basically the same game with a few more bits bolted on, These bolt-ons do improve the game considerably though.
