Soldier of Fortune is a First Person Shooter for the PC, that certainly isn't lacking in gore! Whilst being simple to play and fun for a while, it is ultimately quite one dimensional and lacks any longevity.

Worth a fiver but wouldn't pay much more.

Soldier of fortune is a fps (first person shooter) created by raven software and published by activision. It was released in the year 2000 (which makes me feel inredibly old). SOF's story is nothing revolutionary, a group of neo nazi terrorists steal a handful of nuclear warheads from a russian facility, then sell said warheads to the highest bidding third world countries. The action takes place accross the globe from dense columbian jungle to the streets of Japan with even a few vehicle based missions to get through (gun mounted truck and kick ass attack chopper). The gameplay also is nothing to get overly excited about although it is solid enough to remain an enjoyable experience despite a quite a few bugs and glitches. While not revolutionary in gameplay the controls are simple, the firefights are fun and the graphics weren't too terrible for the time of it's release. What really set SOF apart from the competition was it's very high gore content. A well placed shot would rip limbs off, sever heads from torsos and generally leave one hell of a mess. Weapon wise there are all the usual suspects to be found, shotgun, sniper, pistol, machine gun (you get the idea). There is one slightly more unusual energy based weapon which is fun for popping heads. As my review suggests the over riding sensation while playing through SOF is one of utter averageness, having said which there is a certain playability and the gore factor is quite entertaining. All in all SOF is a competent game that will provide a few hours of fun as you smash and slop you're way through a sea of vital organs but in terms of actual gameplay theres nothing here that you won't find better in a lot of other games.

An excellent and very gory game

Released back in 2000, Soldier of Fortune is a ludicrously violent first person shooter that uses a modified version of the Quake 2 engine and has a real world setting, seeing you play as John Mullins, a highly trained Mercenary working for the US Government to foil a group of terrorists attempting to aquire nuclear weapons in a bid for world domination. Though the 3d-accelerated graphics are perhaps a little chunky-looking today the game nevertheless manages to retain a polished feel, helped along by some excellent animation, well-designed and varied levels and highly-detailed weapon models. The enemy AI is suprisingly good as well. The various missions are diverse and engaging, seeing you doing battle with white power skinheads in a New York Subway, fighting african terrorists on a moving train, getting caught in crossfires in wartorn Kosovo, as well as fighting through a military base in the frozen Siberian wastes and going up against a Yakuza gang in the streets of Japan. Some missions are all-out, gung-ho blast-fests whilst others require careful infiltration to avoid guards from spotting you and tripping the alarm, and the game has a well-executed range of weapons to choose from, including a 9mm pistol, magnum, combat shotgun, rocket launcher, scoped sniper rifle and several different submachineguns. You can only carry a handful of weapons at once, further developing the tactical aspect of the gameplay, and the weapons are tremendously powerful and visceral-feeling to use, the game allowing you to blow opponents limbs and heads off, whilst stomach-shots will expose intestines and sustained automatic fire will keep enemies' lifeless bodies dancing in the air until you release the trigger. You can even blow enemies' weapons out of their hands before plugging them in the head as they beg for mercy, should you wish. Its all very strong stuff, and makes for a very intense and satisfying gaming experience. A well-designed and engaging first person shooter, Soldier of Fortune is an ultra-violent and immensely entertaining game with plenty to offer despite its advancing age.

      An exhilarating ride

Soldier of Fortune is a brilliant and extremely controversial game thanks largely because of its nauseatingly excessive violence, and aestheticisation of such, where you can dismember every part of an opponent's body with the appropriate weaponry. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant game that delivers a satisfyingly visceral punch, a fun and fast-moving plot, and is just challenging enough. The film pits you as John Mullins, a mercenary who works for a company known only as The Shop, and who is attempting to stop a shipment of nuclear weapons to a group of Neo-Nazis. Although not a very long game (that's quite easily completable in under 6 hours), it's an intense and thrilling ride - from the very first moment, you're kitted out with a shotgun, giving you the ability to blow off an enemy's head, blow off their limbs, shoot a hole in their stomach, blow off their grown, and numerous other things. It may say more about the player than anything, but it's extremely satisfying to murder the baddies like this, and then subsequently make a bit of postmodern art with their remains if you wish. It's not a particularly realistic game by today's standards - the violence is ridiculously over-the-top (something the sequels tried to remedy), and there's no damage scale or any recoil, but it's a gleefully overblown adventure that's not too challenging, and extremely fun. From the opening level in a subway station, to riding aboard a train that's carrying a few nukes, to showdowns in Siberia and the Middle East, it's as though you're playing a game of Rambo or something - numerous foreigner baddies fall at your hand in a number of wonderfully gruesome ways. It may not be particularly intelligent, but it's got some great graphics that still stand up, the deliciously depraved GHOUL engine that allows any given number of ways to murder and dismember your enemies, and a solid selection of weapons to do so.

One of the best pc games

This is one of the better pc games out there and will work on some older pc's I can happily say. This fabulous first person mode shooter game comes from activision and is top quality in every way. The levels are set out perfectly and the game is really enjoyable to play as you constantly blast your way through enemy after enemy destroying anything and everything in your path. You can also choose levels of the amount of enemies that there are on each level, so if you wish to add maximum gore and blood levels you can. As you progress through the game you travel from country to country in search of major reknowned terrorists and for some reason the Iraq level seems to stick in my mind. The graphics are superb though for older computers you can set them to lower detail. The animation is also very smooth and everything is clearly defined and easy to spot. The sound effects are also very good and when the volume is turned up loud it really puts you into the atmosphere of the game. This is one pc game which I found incredibly enjoyable though it can be quite easy to work your way through all of the levels.

Soldier of Fortune, on first impressions is very much like the standard Quake/Doom/Duke Nukem type game (and being based on the dated-but-still-good Quake 2 engine, that is probabally not surprising) ..... plenty of weapons, generic opponents, storyline that looks more at home on the sci-fi channel than in a realistic wargame. Granted Ravensoft have pulled off a coup in the character mapping, which is done in such detail that when you shoot an enemy in the throat, he goes down with a muted gurgling sound, clutching his throat ..... very difficult to do, and failed by many before, but superbly executed in this title. You are John Mullins, a mercenary working for the UN through a cover operation called 'the shop'. In the story here you are looking for missing nuclear weapons with the assistance of Sam Gladstone and Hawk (Michael Clarke Duncan - Kingpin from Daredevil), and going into such combat arenas as the New York Subways (Where you encounter the unsavoury Saber, portrayed superbly by Brian Thompson - Shao Khan from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation), Iraq, Japan and Siberia, eventually the trail leads to Dekker, a former South African general who was exiled during the change of governments for his radical views. Sounds like a normal day on 'News at Ten' so far. Although the single player game is good compared to other games of this genre, and the replayability is quite good, where this game comes into its own is on the internet/network options. There are multiple game types to choose from 'out of the box', and yet more appear on a regular basis under player generated and agreed rules (for instance sniper matches are a standard deathmatch game with mutually agreed rules, and specifically designed maps ..... whereas Kill The Man With The Ball is a completely player designed gametype with its own maps and modifications). Within the multiplayer game, Clans have sprung up, usually specialising in a specific game type, and the commun ity spirit they provide is unmatched within any gaming communities in my experience. Setting up a server has been made so easy that even a novice will be able to invite the community to them in no time at all, again this is something not matched, in my experience in Quake, Half Life, etc. Graphics in the game are quite good, but a little blocky, and unfortunately collision detection can be poor (firing through walls, or leaning through a building corner), but this only detracts from the game a little. Sound is again not the best I've heard, but above adequate for this type of game. It will run smoothly on a low end computer with no problems that I have encountered (I run a Celeron 600 with 160Mb RAM, onboard Graphics and sound I would suggest this title for 'middle of the road' players, because although it is an excellent game in its own right, I think it would be seen as a little too challenging for the 'newbie' players, yet far too easy for the experts in the genre.

Soldier of fortune is an excellent first person shooter. You take on the roll of John Mullins who must tackle various situations in various countries. It is nice to see a "real-life" game, with real people instead of monsters etc which have been common place recently. Fans of the Doom & Quake series should love this game. The player starts in a train station, where he must shoot everything moving, bar the hostages. All levels have the same rules - shoot the enemy! but the game is made more exciting by introducing new, more powerful weapons along the way. As before, like Doom & Quake the player has the ability to jump. On some levels the player must master the jump in order to clear large gaps and complete the level. One definate good point of the game is the violence. The player can choose where to shoot the enemy. These include throat shots and nether region shots. The reaction of the enemy depends on where you hit them - Just watch the guys crouch in pain with their hands on their groin! Don't worry though, the violence can be tweaked, so the game is suitable for players of younger ages. Levels include riding a moving train, sewers and skyscrapers. The skscraper level is amazing. The player must find access to a locked office where hostages are being held. The only way into this room is to smash the window in the adjecent room, and walk around the ledge on the outside of the syscraper until you reach the window of the office - COOL!! The game is fast, even on computers without 3fx (with setting set to low). I never grew bored of the game but, I was pretty dissapointed with the ending. (Maybe it is because I had the game mode on Easy). Never the less I am re-playing the game to discover a new ending (hopefully).

About/Type of Game: This game is a first person shooter where you are a person called John Mullins working for an agency, your mission is to search out some nukes off a terrorist organization, through finding these you go through a large selection of areas, from the Iraq dessert to Japanese high rises. The reality of this game is stunning, you can shoot people in the limbs and they will blow off when there still alive, you can also do things like shoot weapons out of their hands. They have also added extra features to make it seem more real, like you can only hold so may weapons so if you want to pickup another you have to throw one away. Graphics: The game can go up to a max resolution of 1600x1200. The graphics on the game are very good and have been made well, even to the details to the people’s faces. Game Play: The game play on this game has to be one of the most fun around at the moment, its just so much fun to blow the people apart!! Weapons: There are lots of weapons which you can pickup along the way in your missions, my favourite has to be the flamethrower though! Multi-Player: The game can be played over the net with an online server or can be played over a network. Over All: This game has to be one of the best first person shooters of this year, its original ideas mixed with its reality just make it so good.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

When i first saw SOF i thouht it was just another first person shoot-em-up but it is so much more than that. For starters the amount of gore in the game can keep you laughing for days. I personally will never get tierd of killing someone and proceding to blow all their limbs off leaving just their torso. Apart from this though the game does have a high level of realsim. the main point being that if you shoot someone in the leg they will limp and if you shoot them in the head they will die. Apart from Operation Flashpoint i cannot thnk of another game that does this. There are also no handy placed med packs scattered when you need them most and then magically respawing back 2 minutes later. The game is also based all over the world at the present time so there are no mutants or spaceships. the whole point of the game is you, John Mullins, trying to save the world from nuclear destruction. Ok, its not the most original of plots but it works out fine. It is also set in real places ranging from New York To Tokyo. Saying that though, the life of the game is not very long. Within about a week you can have it mastered and completed which can proove to make the game a waste of money. The other problem is that, essentially, it is just another first person shoot-em-up which means that really if you've played one then you've played them all. Despite the controvesy of the game, you are being a "good guy" and your killing all the baddies and saving the world. No specific people are shown in the game but there is a character that looks remarkably like Saddam, could it be? The character animation in SOF is amazing. Each person looks different to the other in terms of face AND build which is a novelty. This stops you getting that deja vu feeling like you keep killing the same person over and over again. There is also a multiplayer function as youd come to expect and, as usual it is only a deathm atch. As much fun as it is playing over the internet, i would prefer it if it was possible to go co-operative aswell. Overall, the game doesn't disappoint in the slightest. Its a fun game single player and double the fun multiplayer. The only quarrel i have is that it is not long enough.

Kingpin, you may recall, was the middlebrow tabloids’ nemesis - a gore-laden swear-fest in which subtlety of tactical play and strategic planning played no part. It may have been a great-looking, well-balanced game, but its dour setting, constant profanity and ruthless action made it a depressing experience. As such, it didn’t fare as well as it should have. Enter then, the shadowy figure of Soldier Of Fortune, peering surreptitiously around the corner of opportunity and preparing to rob Kingpin of its ‘most gratuitously violent FPS’ crown. SOF is surely going to become the blood-stained daddy of the hardcore shooter genre, but, as Raven’s Kenn Hoekstra tells us, its title is something of a double-edged sword. “Sure, it’s a first-person game with the option to see a lot of gore, but the emphasis is on realism. We’ve worked very closely with Soldier Of Fortune magazine to ensure that these are exactly the results you’d expect to see in real-life situations with these weapons.” Which is, of course, shocking - but at the same time strangely laudable. We might be surprised to learn that a Magnum will take a person’s head clean off his shoulders, but if that’s what ex-paratrooper, Green Beret and Special Forces operative John F Mullins says, who are we to argue?

One word of advice before anyone touches this game.It is not for the weak-hearted.You can inflict any kind of wound u want!!! As good as a bad movie can be is what the game can be described as. So, you are John Mullins, the biggest smart-arse ever to appear on a pc game. Mullins is a james bond wannabe, who performs all sorts of secret military type operations for an underground anti-terrorist organization called ’’The Shop’’. Your contact at The Shop is an old bearded guy that acts like you mentor but looks like someone who took too much LSD during the sixties. You also have a team mate that helps you on your missions, a big bloke called ’’Hawk’’. Following the bad movie routine, the plot will have you running around the world in search of stolen nukes (what a great idea) and shooting bad guys. Many of the situations you’ll go through will remind you of things you’ve seen in action films before, like the train mission, or the mission in Iraq when a soldier asks for your identification and then hell brakes loose. This sense of familiarity really favours the game, and the feeling of being inside an action TV show can be a lot of fun, as long as you don’t care for the unrestricted violence detail. The gore in this game scales new height. Now if u take a knife and then aim at his face or his groin and throw the knife. He dies instantly. If u aim his chest or leg or something.. he is just hurt. He limps for a while and then attacks you again. With the shotgun, you can unleash rampage. Just aim at the head and then see the gore! Thankfully, they have a violence lock. There are some cool videos in the game. You will see them as you keep proceeding. The sound in the game is nothing much to write about but it does the job. At the end of the day you get a smooth, highly playable game. It’s fun to play and has enough atmosphere to make it immersive. If Soldier of Fo rtune was a movie it would be the kind of thing that you would be ashamed to rent from your videostore. As a game it’s an effective stress-reliever, but if you have a grasp on reality you’ll soon discover there’s nothing new to keep you coming back for more. Apart from the gore, it’s all too brainless to remember. On the long term run Soldier of Fortune will never become a reference to 1st person games as quake or half life have. Still, for now, well, go ahead and enjoy the ride.

Ooooh! Controversial violent game. Lets stick on an 18 certificate which everybody will ignore, drum up some media indignation at our moral decline, and guarantee a surefire No1 selling hit! Cynical attitude maybe, but no less cynical than the marketing merchants who grabbed this game, and thrust it to the front of the limelight, giving it far more attention than it deserved. Essentially, this game is a run of the mill Qauke style first person shooter. It performs competently enough, the graphics are smooth and clear, and it is relatively fun to play. It has nothing to make it more outstanding than any other game of its type apart from the violence. The violence cannot be ignored. It is an integral part of the game, and its main selling point, and indeed attraction for many consumers. It purports to being realistic, but that carries no weight apart from being an excuse to justify its explicitness. I must admit that personally I was taken in by the dismembering, and a little shocked by the agonised screams coming from the groin injured enemies, but it quickly becomes tiresome. There are only a limited number of animations for the dying soldiers, and their death throes soon become familiar. To sell a game based on the violence alone is simply criminal, and all it does is serve to hamper game developement from other sources who are constantly held back by the wittering moral majority who like to interfere in issues they have no knowledge about. The game itself was an average to good attempt, if a little on the easy side (I usually have to resort to cheating on first-person shooters, but I finished this quite quickly). Apparently there is a sequel in production which is going to have even more 'realistic' violence. Lets hope it isn't another exercise in cynically cashing in on the game buying public.
