Advantages: Gorey and simple fun

Disadvantages: Shallow and ultimately Unsatisfying

Soldier of fortune is a fps (first person shooter) created by raven software and published by activision. It was released in the year 2000 (which makes me feel inredibly old).

SOF's story is nothing revolutionary, a group of neo nazi terrorists steal a handful of nuclear warheads from a russian facility, then sell said warheads to the highest bidding third world countries. The action takes place accross the globe from dense columbian jungle to the streets of Japan with even a few vehicle based missions to get through (gun mounted truck and kick ass attack chopper).

The gameplay also is nothing to get overly excited about although it is solid enough to remain an enjoyable experience despite a quite a few bugs and glitches. While not revolutionary in gameplay the controls are simple, the firefights are fun and the graphics weren't too terrible for the time of it's release.

What really set SOF apart from the competition was it's very high gore content. A well placed shot would rip limbs off, sever heads from torsos and generally leave one hell of a mess.

Weapon wise there are all the usual suspects to be found, shotgun, sniper, pistol, machine gun (you get the idea). There is one slightly more unusual energy based weapon which is fun for popping heads.

As my review suggests the over riding sensation while playing through SOF is one of utter averageness, having said which there is a certain playability and the gore factor is quite entertaining.

All in all SOF is a competent game that will provide a few hours of fun as you smash and slop you're way through a sea of vital organs but in terms of actual gameplay theres nothing here that you won't find better in a lot of other games.

Summary: Worth a fiver but wouldn't pay much more.
