'Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2' is a game played from a birds-eye-view position. However, unlike most games set out this way, the graphics offer a much greater level of detail. The tanks and infantry you get to control move around realisticly... they sometimes even drop their weapons accidentally in combat!
The campaign side to this game offers a range of exciting missions which take you through a number of different terrains. Though the action is good fun, you're usually left in control of a small amout of troops which takes the feel of an all-out war away from the game - something I don't understand. Also, the paths you can take in campaign mode are very restrictive, limiting the amount of excitement you can have in a mission.
Online mode is very, very good when your actually able to play. Realisticly, its one of the poorest online modes I've ever seen. You are made to download mod after mod (not supplied my codemasters) to actually get it to work, due to the high amount of faults the original game has. If you ever get it to work, online allows you to build your tanks up into a full-blown military out-fit before battling it out with players from across the globe - very entertaining and very fun.
Graphics are detailed, whilst allowing the game to run smoothly if your computer has the correct requirements (listed later in the review). Dust effects look great, as well as surrounding buildings, roads and rivers. If only the game-play matched the graphics of this game!

Poor game-play really brings this game to quite a disoppointing low. Codemasters have let the gaming world down with this failure of a World War Two strategy game.
Soldiers: Heroes of World War II was released in 2004, and is still a pretty good game after four years. The past few years have seen no shortage of games based on World War II; but this game was the first in a series of real-time tactics video games based in this era.
The gameplay allows you to take control of either English, American, German or Russian soldiers and although it is primarily a strategy game; it doesn't mean you can't take your troops and fight the enemy!
The game offers extremely detailed environments and units. The graphics are superb. The fully 3D gameplay engine is very complex. The soldiers can run, crawl, smoke cigarettes while they are standing still. There is just so much detail in this game, props to the artists and animators. There is also a varied look. When in battle you see wheels coming off cars and jeeps, explosions if you blow up a fuel deposit, people jumping out of cars that are on fire; and much more.
This game also features a multi-player mode. You can play any of the campaign missions and most of the stand-alone missions in co-op mode with up to three more players (four players all together). Which is great for someone who enjoys gaming with people.
Overall, Soldiers: heros of war II this a great game that, in my opinion, will appeal to most stategy fans. A great christmas present, dispite its age.
