SPIDERMAN 2
I went to see this movie at the cinema over the weekend and although I wasn't that hyped up over it I was ecpecting a rather exceptional movie. I really enjoyed the movie SPIDERMAN so was looking forward to the follow up however the sPiDeRmAn SuCcEsS didn't shine so much throughout this sequel which was a little disapointing. Do not get me wrong - I enjoyed the film but as like most sequels it wasn't as good as what everyone makes it out to be. My partner really didn't enjoy it at all and he adored the first Spiderman movie! (However - I think this was due to the lack of fighting and violence and the more focused storyline of a love story) The film had its highs and lows like most movies so read on to find out more...
THE STORYLINE
The movie continues from where it left off 2 years ago (Although 2 years has passed!) Peter Parker is now living alone in a grotty bedsit whilst his Aunt lives alone in their old family home. Two years ago Peter was bitten by a genetically modified spider which transformed him into Spiderman. The second installment of Spiderman moves on from looking at how Spiderman came to be and we are now concentrating on Peters life and how Spiderman has changed Peter Parker in more than one way. With Peters uncle dieing in the first movie, Peter now has a main responsibility of caring for his elderly Aunt May who is struggling emotionally and financially. Peter is also trying to focus on the girl of his dreams - 'MJ' (Remember - the girl next door!?) and he is also trying to work part time to pay his rent and he is also focusing best he can on his school work.
Being Spiderman has meant Peter Parker has had to hide things that he doesen't want to from his best girlfriend Mary-Jane and he also lets her down on many occasions.
Due to Spiderman duties, Peter lets MJ down one too many times and he arrives late to her show to find her smooching all over her new boyfriend. He decides that he should be the most important person in his life right now and what he wants is what should matter. Peter feels he really needs MJ and if that means giving up Spiderman - He's going to have to do it! The newspapers announce that Spiderman is 'NO LONGER' and Peter tries to get on with his real life as Peter Parker and no-one else.
But will it last? - Spiderman is surely needed in the busy city of crime and unfairness (New York)and he is a well known superhero - he can't just quit - can he?!
Whilst Spiderman is facing the toughest decisions of his life, Scientist Otto Octavius has nearly completed his new project which has a final opening evening - A presentation Peter is delighted to attend. Dr.Octavius has invented a machine that attaches itself to his body with steel tentacles that will enable him to carry out tasks in the energy field, without causing any harm to himself. But things do not necessarily go as they are planned and Spiderman is needed. But will he return...?
Dr.Octavius has been transformed and now Spiderman is in desperate demand - New York needs him!
I'm not going to spoil anymore of the plot but the story unravels a show of love, betrayal and trust between MJ and Peter. Peter's relationship with his Aunt is also established and lets not forget his best friend Harry Osborn who leaves us with an ending that rather suggests there will be a third Spiderman...
As you can tell the story is a mixture of everything in Peter's life but this means less action and more meaning to whats going on. You may find this a good thing - you may not.
ACTORS/ACTRESSES
The same actors are present in the sequel and they all do a really good job:
~~ Tobey Maguire ~~ Continues very well with his role as geeky Peter Parker and Spiderman. His cute looks are covered up well with those sexy spec's and cute side parting!
~~ Kirsten Dunst ~~ As gorgeous as ever as MJ and does a good job with her acting as well. Ms.Dunst plays an innocent, trustworthy and loyal character very well.
~~ J K Simmons ~~ Continues to make us chuckle as J Jonah Jameson, the editor at the local newspaper. The acting is great and good comedy.
~~ James Franco ~~ Does really well as the estranged mate of Peter although does not really come into the film much until towards the end. His acting is rather good at certain important parts during the film.
There are many other famous faces as well and all do very good jobs. Aunt May's character is much older and quite frail in this second installment which I'm sure is meant to be but she can still pull off a pleasant character. The scientist is also a rather outstanding character with a serious side but can also be quite comical.
THE SOUNDTRACK
The soundtrack is as follows but unfortunately I cannot rate it as I don't own it. (However I can tell you a little about a couple of the tracks...)
1. Vindicated - Dashboard Confessional
2. Ordinary - Train
3. Did You - Hoobasta.
4. Hold On - Jet
5. Gifts And Curses - Yellowcard
6. Woman - Maroon 5
7. This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know) - Taking Back Sunday
8. Give It Up - Midtown
9. Lucky You - Lostprophets
10. Who I Am - Smile Empty Soul
11. The Night That The Lights Went Out In NYC - The Ataris
12. Meant To Live - Switchfoot
13. We Are - Ana Johnsson
14. Someone To Die For - Jimmy Gnekko Featuring Brian May
15. Spidey Suite - Danny Elfman
16. Doc Ock Suite - Danny Elfman
17. She Spider - Mew
The track most people will know is from 'Ana Johnsson' as this is the official released soundtrack. I had never heard of Ana before this track but I adore the song! The song is quite up-tempo and with a rock theme it really sounds pretty good. This song is available to buy in shops now I'm led to believe - One downer though is that the song fails to be sung within the movie!? Weird. I'm hoping Ana Johnsson will have much more music to come our way.
The soundtrack also consists of a few other well known artists: 'Train' makes an appearance - the band who sung 'Drops of Jupiter' and also 'Jet' who are up and coming in the world of music. 'Maroon 5' also add their song, 'Woman' whilst 'The Lost Prophets' sing 'Lucky You'. If I do go out and buy this soundtrack I will update my review to give you more details.
SUMMARY
Although I may sound like I'm putting this film down - it is worth a watch and i mean it. The actors are superb and it is good fun to watch the sequel. It just has a lot less action than the original Spiderman and is more focused on a story of love, trust and faith. You will have to make your own minds up on whether to watch this one guys!
The tail of love and lust may send you to sleep - especially is you watch the 10pm showing like we did. (Its a relatively long film!) but the action will soon wake you up again. The graphics and scenes are all really interesting to watch - there has been a lot of time and a lot of effort put into this sequel but it just seems so different from the first movie! As like all movies I suppose this has its ups and downs but I'm glad I went to see it so it can't be that bad - right!? I think I find with all sequels they usually do not live up to certain expectations! This is a movie that you may fall bored in but trust me it does have its better bits!
DIRECTOR: Sam Raimi
RUNNING TIME: 128 minutes
CERTIFICATE: PG (Spiderman 1 was a 12A)
RELEASED: 15th July
The trilogy will hopefully be completed by May 2007. That gives people a lot of time to focus on the final chapter!
Thanks for reading
Emma x
Summary: Great sequel - but not as great as I'd hoped it to be!
