Advantages: Depth of story, abaility to play dark and light sides
Disadvantages: Somewhat complex and takes time to get the most out of the game
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is a role playing gane based in the Star Wars universe, hundreds of years before the original trilogy. You play a young soldier who must come to terms with the fact that they are strong in the Force.
The game is widely considered to be one of the finest games based on the Star Wars universe and certainly has the depth to become totally emersive. Being set years before A New Hope, the developers have had the freedom to come up with a fantasic new environment, but still has a certain familiarity.
The game is played in the third person and is general role playing fare: walk, talk, buy etc accross a number of expansive worlds. The game itself is non-linear and the various worlds can be visited and re-visited in any order. As the story develops, you meet new companions who follow you on your journey, including droids, smugglers and jedi knights. As things develop, you become a jedi and learn new powers as you experience points grow. XPs are gained from certain tasks and defeating enemies.
The unique selling point to this game, however, is that you have the abaility, based on your choices, the become either a true jedi knight, of fall to the dark side. Depending on your path, your appearance and attitude towards other people an situations change as well.
Although the game can feel quite complicated and it may take you a quick run through before starting a peoper game to get the hang of things, KOTOR is a wonderfully immersive and engaging game that will have you comeing back again and again to try things in new ways to see what happens. At the very least, you will want to finish the game twice: once for the light side and once for the dark side!
Summary: A perfectly valid addition to the Star Wars mythology
