Advantages: Very balanced races, great system
Disadvantages: weak storyline
It's so difficult to start with Starcraft. What can I say other then what you know? It's so hard not to know this game, so few have played it, but then again it's not impossible that you haven't. So let's begin with the basics of the game.
Starcraft's fame sprung largely from it's simple yet diverse strategy base. the races are easy to move about, the concepts are easy to understand and right away you can get a sense for what type of race you're dealing with. The protoss' sluggish development but deadly units, the Zerg's ridiculous abundance of forces, generally weaker in nature, and the Terran's overall general rounded off style.
Of course the first thing you tend to do when playing this game, is mass produce one unit. Usually the first. The depth of strategy becomes invisible and slowly they reveal themselves. The storyline is fairly weak in my opinion, but then again I never really like the stories that stem from Blizzard. I mean they all have fairly standard story lines yes, but none of it really strikes me as unique and frankly I believe they are really more a vessel to get the game's necessary foundations more so then to draw the player in.
One of the reasons Starcraft got so big was the balances set in it. Everything was balanced, everything was fair if you knew the race well enough to wield it. Despite all this there are players who will swear by one race over another, convinced that the race of their choosing is superior until somebody comes along and wipes the floor with their face with another. Strategy is not only key, it's everything, and though that sounds redundant for an RTS game, there are many whose strategy involves getting Unit A out the fastest, and though yes that is indeed one strategy the Zerg uses *Zerg rush!!!*, building only one type of unit which isn't the strongest *even then, not a smart move*, will get you cleaned out, and fast.
This explorable depth is what makes this game not only fun and memorable, but something that will last you for a long long time. Not many games can boast to have a healthy and strong playing base still nearly 12 years after releasing it.
Summary: Still worth buying today.
