Team Fortress 2 (PC)
Advantages: Free. Lots of fun
Disadvantages: Requires internet connection. Micro-purchase system rewards people who choose to spend cash
Team Fortress 2 is a totally free (as of 2011) team based multiplayer first-person shooter with a strong graphical style and an emphasis on fun and slapstick rather than the usual bloody violence, which makes a refreshing change.
You will need an internet connection to play TF2 as the single-player is very limited, being just the training missions.
You join a team and choose an offensive (scout, soldier, pyro), defensive (demoman, heavy, engineer,) or support (medic, sniper, spy) role. Each have their own unique primary weapons and abilities, for instance the engineer can build turrets and resupply points, and the spy can disguise himself as enemy players and then backstab them.
Each character has a unique size, shape and voice animations, which adds character but also makes sense tactically as you can quickly identify targets.
There are three game modes - capture the flag, control point capture and payload maps where a team has to push a bomb in a mine cart into the enemy base where it detonates.
The graphics remind me of a Looney Tunes cartoon, with brightly coloured environments and strong lines delineating the details in addition to cartoonish character design. The audio effects are similarly silly, a lot of the characters have strong accents and communication between team members is often very funny.
TF2 went free to play in 2011, it is now subsidised by the Mann Co store, where players are encouraged to purchase equipment and more powerful weapons. This does give richer players an advantage but it doesn't unbalance the game.
This game is tremendous fun and will last you a very long time. Considering TF2 is now free it's a no-brainer. Get it through Steam - the online games client - and you'll receive free gear depending on what other Steam games you have.
Summary: If you've got the internet connection there's no excuse. Get this.
