This game was where the settlers lost its way in my opinion. The joy of the previous games was the intricacy and infuriating but fascinating way all the various parts of the village economy interacted. That made it a great game that responded well to careful game management without being totally within the gift of the player.
The problem with heritage of kings was that it moved the franchise away into a more conventional point and click RTS without that organic feeling to the building phase. Positive points were the improved graphics and introduction of character development, as well as the more involving military aspects of the game. If they had put those features on top of the economic base of the predecessors it would have been great.
Still, although less fun for that reason, it's a solidly-put together game in most respects, just one that fails to stand out.
