I purchased The Ship about 4 years ago when I found it on sale, and I'm glad that I did. This game has been hours of fun, and it's a lot different than any game that I've ever played
There are two versions of this game, the single-player, and the multi-player. The single player mode has a good story line and missions to keep you interested. The plot of the game starts when the ship owner, Mr. X, tells you that you're going to play a little "game". You are in the middle of the ocean, and to survive on the ship, you must hunt the other passengers, while being hunted at the same time. You are given different missions by different members of the crew, and it is your job to successfully complete them.
You are assigned one passenger to hunt at a time, and you can only use weapons found on the ship. They are usually hidden in different places, and you have to find them before your hunt. You have to be careful while hunting, because if you're caught by a security guard or a camera, you will be thrown in jail and have to restart the mission. To let you know if you are being watched, there is an icon on your screen of an eyeball. When the eyeball is green, you're good to go, but if it's read, don't take out any weapons.
The multi-player is also fun. You join a cruise of a few people plus computer players. Each round is a couple of minutes long, and you are assigned someone to hunt. Most people are friendly, and games are fun and competitive. The game is hosted through Steam, so in order to play, you must download the Steam client and have an account (all for free)
In both modes, you must make sure you take care of your player. Each player has needs that need to be met. They have to go to the bathroom, shower, eat, sleep, be entertained, and be social. During your hunt, you need to find time to make sure you meet the requirements of your character. Be careful though, you can be hunted in your sleep!
Overall, both the single-player and multi-player versions of this game are a blast! The game is pretty easy to understand, and gives you a lot of fun hours of gameplay. I would suggest this game for anyone looking for a different kind of first person shooter.
When you hear of online multiplayer first person shooters, you probably think of games like Counter-Strike or Battlefield, but this is where "The Ship" comes in. Made by Outerlight, this PC thriller is unlike any game you have ever played as it's got more akin to the classic board game Cluedo than any other piece of software out right now. It is the goal of every player on the cruise to murder their randomly decided victim, but it's a lot more complex than going up to your would be pray and shooting them in the face. Oh no, The Ship requires stealth, skill and wit for any player to ascend the ranks.
As aforementioned each player will be assigned another human player whom they must kill, so not only will the user have to hunt down their victim, they'll also have to keep one eye in their head at all times to avoid being murdered themselves. Their are two big factors that make this game intriguing, the first is the role of security. The Ship is filled with people and items that are just waiting to see you do something wrong, so should a player pull out a weapon or even kill someone in front of security cameras, witnesses or security guards, they will be sent to jail and given a hefty fine. So each kill has to be done with extreme care and skill. The second factor that makes The Ship so unique is the needs bar. Each player has to fulfill certain needs such as eating food, sleeping and socialising plus more. If a player fails to fulfill these tasks they will die and suffer a harsh fine.
So when you think about it, there are a lot of things going on in every game. Each player is trying to hunt down their target at the same time avoiding their would be murderer while making sure they keep all of their needs bars at a maximum. Graphically the game shows it's age. Released in 2006, The Ship looked pretty bad back then and it really shows its age in 2010. The developers have tried to go for a unique cartoony take on the graphics and it has somewhat worked but the terrible animations keep this game from ever being a true classic. All in all this is a game for the thinking player. It'll be a blast for the first few days but the great premise has little to offer in lengevity, but nonetheless it is a game that any fan of strategy should at least try.
The ship is an innovative new multiplayer online game and i was instantly drawn and intrigued by the story and the gameplay.
Simply put, you are invited on a ship by Mr X, and your aim is to kill a person specified by Mr X, being given a name only on the ship, before someone else with YOUR name kills you. You have no idea who is out to hunt you so you must be cautious yet quick!
You need to find weapons in wardrobes, cupboards, bins, staff rooms, even the toilet and they have a giant range: umbrellas, axes, guns, walking stick, mannequin hand, injection needles.... but beware of the cameras and witnesses, if they spot you with a weapon for more than a specified time period (usually a few seconds), you go to jail, lose some money and all your weapons! After about a minute you are free again.
This game of cat and mouse is extremely tense and the atmosphere on the ship is fantastic, espeically the music. It uses a mix of 1950s tracks and some more upbeat ones, but overall creating a really aged, thematic and real set, in which this game is set.
This game is a new idea and is fantastic fun. The controls are not too difficult and there is always single multiplayer to practise. For a great innovative multiplayer online game, get this!
You can get this for under £10 online, or at direct download from Steam. Also, this game CANNOT be bought second hand due to activation issues, so you'll have to buy it retail or direct from steam!
