Advantages: addictive gameplay, extensive customisation

Disadvantages: huge size and memory useage

I recently had the urge to return to my Sims 2 game, after a very long sabbatical from it. It is a very addictive game that is so easy to play for hours without realising just how fast the time is flying.

The graphics in comparison to The Sims are far superior, with greater character and home customisation, and a range of new features such as aspirations. However, this can have its downsides, as the sheer size of the game takes up a lot of disk space, requires 4 disks just to install the product, and throttles all of your computer's memory. It's not a good idea to try and run Sims 2 at the same time as ANYTHING else. My laptop often can't cope with the sheer requirements of this game, despite exceeding the specifications recommended on the box, and will just freeze, forcing me to restart the entire laptop.

Nevertheless, when it's working, it's very good. You can create characters and alter their appearance and personalities, make them interact with each other, and establish their careers and life goals in an attempt to make them happy. Or you can just find new and inventive ways of killing them off. The flexibility is up to you.

The Sims franchise can be criticised for the sheer number of expansion packs that it has brought out for this product, encouraging people to pay £30-40 for extra features to add to this already quite bloated game, which I would argue aren't worth paying for. Sims 2 on its own, is fun enough.

Summary: A classic game that is always fun to come back to.
