The classic quiz board game Trivial Pursuit is claimed by the Website to be the most popular Trivia Board game in the world, and having googled here and there I can find no evidence to refute their claim. I know that I like the game although sometimes it can be a bit slow. Best played with a wee dram I think. Well the tedium associated with the set up and moving of pieces has been removed by the introduction of a PC version.

The software is published by Atari who are perhaps more famous for the great games they brought out in the eighties when electronic gaming was bursting onto the scene. The game play in exactly the same as the board game being that you have to answer questions to move around the board. The board in this case is the large visible circular object which rotates around the centre of the screen once the game has been started. Before this you have to set the options for the game I.e. A Quick standard game, A normal Standard game, or a game with a twist called unhinged. After choosing the game option you select and name the players taking part in the game, and select which colour each player will be represented by. Here you can also select how the questions are to be answered, the options are by shouting out your guess, or by selecting from four answers displayed on the screen.

The interaction between the screen and the players is mostly done by simply clicking the mouse to roll the dice and select the correct answer, in multi-choice mode. Once the dice is rolled the positions available for your moves flash their outer edges to show the current player his or her options. There are six major locations on the board which must be visited by every player and they represent the six different category of questions. Each category is represented by a specific colour to help the players remember and decide their tactics.

Brown Science and Nature
Green Sports and Leisure
Orange Wild Card


The basic object of the game is to visit the six major locations and answer that question, whereby you will be given a coloured wedge to fit in your game piece, collect all wedges first and win. The central part of the circular board is the only place where you get to choose the category, but no wedges can be won here. So answer questions and move round the board following the numbers on the dice, trying to land on the major locations, simple. Well it would be should it be that easy, in fact some of the questions on this DVD are quite hard, so quick games even in quick mode are seldom such.

The unhinged game is played in exactly the same manor as the normal game except this time there are additional places on the game board, some are beneficial to the player and others are a setback, there is no way of knowing by simply looking at the board, it just pot luck. This adds a nice little touch to the game. The graphics to the trivial Pursuit PC edition are adequate, well actually they are quite good, just not as good as they might have bee, there are thousands of questions and a status screen above each player will let them at a glance see which subjects are letting them down, by means of a small coloured bar which goes either positive or negative. The sound is courtesy of a rather pleasant sounding female, who informs whether you are correct or not, there are some quite funny one liners to be heard too, especially if this woman feels you should have answered correctly and you got it wrong. All in all this is a really good conversion of the famous board game especially when I got it for a humble quid in pound land.
