This is the third game in the Unreal Tournament series and it is the first one that I've actually played. Some people have said that it isn't as good as the previous titles but obviously I cannot comment on that.
If you hadn't realised by now this game is a first person shooter. You can use a controller or use the standard control scheme for PC i.e. using buttons on the keyboard to move and the mouse to aim and shoot. I prefer using the keyboard and mouse and wouldn't change the controls in any way. The vehicles also control well. This is quite a recent game so the graphics are great but they are obviously better if you have a good graphics card and a good amount of RAM. The cutscenes look very good as well.
When I first saw this game I thought that the single player mode would be a story based campaign and to some extent this is true but instead of playing through levels you are just playing certain modes such as capture the flag in the same levels that you can play in quick play mode and online but with a story behind it.
There are many different game types and this is great, new modes such as warfare add something different. There are quite a few different levels which are all well designed and fun to play, my favourite is the space station one where once you get outside the gravity is a lot less which a nice little touch. The range of weapons is good as well with standard guns i.e. the minigun as well as goo spraying guns that dissolve your enemies.
Unreal Tournament is all about the multiplayer and the online mode is great, it doesn't take long to find a server with a map and game mode you like and the loading times aren't bad either, I haven't experienced any lag. So overall a great shooter, I especially recommend it if you like playing online.
Unreal Tournament has been a best selling title for years, and this game is the latest rendition in the series. It is available on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and of course the PC. The target of this new game is to achieve a great first person online shooter, that also doubles up to have a single player game, where players can practice there skills in a story mode.
I'll start with the graphics capabilities of this game, which are outstanding. I got this version of the game for the PC, and it's not a particular good PC either, with an average graphics card, and yet the graphics were HD quality. They were simply outstanding on my PC, the lighting is what made them look so good, and really came across as futuristic, which is what I am sure the creators were looking to create.
The gameplay is another advantage that this game has got over the competition, Unreal has bought along its classic gameplay features, and added into the mix some modern features, like a hoverboard for quick access around the field of play, or the new jump pack, which works very well. That's another things I love about this game, the variety of vehicles is fantastic in this game, and equal if not better the machines in Halo 3.
The weapons variety is impressive, there are more in this version than in previous renditions of the game, there are only 8 weapons, but each one has been perfected to cover a certain category, and everyone who plays this game will find a gun that they love, my personal favourite is the flak cannon.
The online mode works very well as expected, with a moderately fast broadband connection, I had no flaws at all, except that there were many experienced gamers who were better than me, and killed me loads. The story mode is basically a series of arena encounters, but with some clips in the middle, while on paper this does not seem impressive, it does work well.
Overall I think that this game is a real stunner, it impresses on all levels, and is a best seller. I would recommend it to anyone who likes first person shooters, it's now dead cheap and can be picked from Amazon for a tenner.
A good game, but needs more content.
Many of the people who play this game have played UT2004, the predecessor of of Unreal tournament III and may of been shocked at this games high graphic usage, meaning that if you only have a mediocre graphics card, you're not going to enjoy this game much.
The game play is good, and i like the new editions to the vehicle arsenal and your weapons.
Not to mention the hoverboard, but overall it's the same UT engine, which is both good and bad.
The good is that overall, it still feels like the balanced engine it always has, but the bad is this doesn't allow for significant changes in game play. The new vehicles add an interesting edge, with the necris, and the additions are fun to pilot and use.
The mine layer is one of my favourites, with it's ability to lay down the "slow-mo" cube, a device that creates a cube of "slowed down" time, this gives a major advantage to who evers side the cube is on.
The game has a polished feel, the result of many iterations before hand, and i truly like to play it, but it hasn't got the same amount of addictiveness that the previous titles had.
One thumb up.
Unreal Tournamet 3 is a massive step from Epic Games compared to the likes of Unreal Tournament 2004 but was it in the right direction?
Ok i will begin with saying the game itself is fantastic, its equally as good as 04 but it wasnt better it was however different.
The game still requires a lot of skill but it seems as if they reduced the jumping and sped up the movement speed so its more about dodging rather than dodge jumping.
The game itself is very good but the game has many flaws/
First and foremost the storyline mode sucks end of i wont go into why but it sucks however thats not what Unreal Tournament is about and i didnt expect it too be good.
The biggest flaw is that when you come from Unreal 04 there were hundreds of character models, hudreds of maps (created by the developers) there were loads of game modes, loads of smaller options to make life easy but that has all been stripped from the game. There are like 20 characters, 15 maps, all the basic game modes but no Bombing run, mutant etc.
What this game needs is a Unreal 3.5 which is the same game but with all teh content, modes etc and then the game is perfect.
I thought Unreal Tournament III for the PC was a great buy at £11 from Amazon. My main reason for buying was because of the previous Unreal Tournament games, expecting a game of the same quality.
Graphically the game is amazing advancements have been made (as you would expect) and the game is simply stunning. However the game is buggy and pictures become distorted and then the game becomes unplayable until you exit game and restart it! Which when you have almost won the final battle in story mode is quite simply frustrating.
Game play wise the game has not been improved, vehicles have been added, but I find these more of an annoyance then anything. Furthermore a new 'warfare' battle mode has been added and this requires the user to run about fighting for nodes to connect to the other team's core.
In general I think this is a great game, but considering it's the previous games if you're expecting something amazing you will be quite disappointed.
now im going by the pc version when i write this review but if its anything like the pc version at all then it will be absolutely FANTASTIC. on the pc you have a choice of many gut wrenching, blood splattering weapons from pistols to miniguns. you also have many different vehicles to choose from. there are tanks and hovercraft, and my personal favourite the hoverboard. there is a thrilling single player campaign including many team missions along with missions on your own. the maps are on many levels and would appeal to expert gamers and new players alike. the spread of the weapons across the map is good and all of the upgrades are also very nice. the characters are butch and wear nice armour (helped by the fantastic graphics). the multiplayer is spiced up by the comentator in the background shouting out phrases like "double kill" and "killing spree". overall a great game
Purposefully held over to take full advantage of next generation PC graphics cards and the new consoles, this latest sequel in the Unreal Tournament series is looking to set new standards for multiplayer first person shoot æem-ups. Considering developer Epic GamesÆ Unreal graphics technology is used by so many other companies you always know a new Unreal Tournament game is going to look good. ThereÆs tons of new features beyond just eye candy here though, including a whole new game mode called Warfare, which works like a combination of the existing Assault and Onslaught modes, with more involved mission goals that make team play absolutely essential to success.
