Advantages: AMAZING online play
Disadvantages: None
In the late 1990s, there were two FPS games to rule them all - Quake 3 Arena, and Unreal Tournament. A debate over which is better will just send me into a tailspin, so I won't go there. Regardless of which is actually better, what is certain is that Unreal Tournament is one of the best FPS games ever made, particularly because of its stunning online mode that is still played today the world over.
Although you can play a single player campaign against bots, it's not even worth talking about if you have an Internet connection (which, of course, you do, reading this), because the online multiplayer offering, simply, is one of the best online experiences you'll ever have. Loaded with numerous modes, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and even a special Assault mode (where you have to try and take over an opponent's fortress), there's lots to do.
Also, there's a vast array of sophisticated weaponry, from laser and ray guns, to sludge launchers, to high-powered sniper rifles, and even a disc-launcher called the Ripper. Not to mention, you have a device called a Translocator, which allows you to teleport to other locations on the map, and if you manage to translocate as someone stands on the reciever of the device, you'll turn them into mush. OH, and I almost forgot about the Redeemer - a HUGE rocket that, if fired into a crowd players, will obliterate them all in a split second, and you get to guide it yourself with special rocket-o-vision.
The maps are unequivocally what makes the game what it is - I became incredibly addicted to a Capture the Flag map called Facing Worlds, which is just expertly designed, and perhaps the best online map I've ever played. It allows use of all of the best weapons in a very balanced way, and even if you don't win, it's a hell of a lot of fun!
Whilst serves don't get as much attention now due to the newer UT games, it's still in the eyes of many the best of the bunch, and is certainly an online hallmark that, in my opinion, hasn't ever really been bettered. This is an insanely addictive game, and I remember spending many weekends playing it and doing nothing else as a kid!
Summary: A perfect online game
