Advantages: Excellent graphics; better than original Unreal; great modes
Disadvantages: Bad networking code; other aspects could have been tweaked to the max.
Unreal Tournament is an innovation among all the "other" multiplayer games. While it didn't quite name itself "Game of Year Honors" by many publications (like CGW), it did manage to call itself one thing, the first real complete 3D action multiplayer game to date. It has many modes that may have made it deserve these honors and awards from the distinct publications. If different modes in your multiplayer games is your taste and style, then Unreal Tournament has your name written all over it. First, let's start off with the single-player aspect of the game. If you want to go straight into the game, then the Deathmatch mode will only be the availible mode at first, but as you beat that, and the other games, you can unlock the other games like Assault. Unreal Tournament also features a Practice mode which has all the modes within them already, so you'll want to start off with the Practice mode to sample what the game has to offer. The game is good! The gameplay of Capture The Flag is almost equal to that of Team Fortress while the Deathmatch rivals that of Quake II/III. That is what make Unreal Tournament a complete 3D multiplayer game. The game features nice options for customizing of the game. There's a system console that allows for cheats(though you don't need them). Also it features a superior TimeDemo utility. What this does is that it measures frane rate or how fast your game is going. Speaking of that, the game runs great! On my computer which is a 350 PII, 128 mb of RAM, and TNT2 card, it's super fast---- average of 45 fps with some details knocked down. But beware though, if you only have 32 MB of Ram, and no 3D accelerator, then prepare for frustration. On my friend's computer (300 mhz Cyrix, 32 MB of RAM, and 4MB S3 Virge card), no 3D acceleration could be used, and the software renderer was very slow. So make sure you are able to have at least 64 MB of RAM and a 3D accelerator to enjoy prope
rly without any stuttering. This is as I said before, a complete game. It has great graphics, sounds, and other niggles to make it the one of the best this year. The multiplayer though has a problem with high pings. Although there are like countless servers out there and different ways to play the multiplayer games, the networking code should have been fixed up properly from the original Unreal which had a terrible code. Other than that, this game is great. Now stop reading this and go play Unreal Tournament!!!!
