Advantages: None - - it's cheap so Blizzard can get you hooked like a dealer
Disadvantages: Everything else
If you're looking to invest in a couple years spent locked in your room furious gettering away at keys and barking orders to your fellow teammates via Vent (Ventrilo chat), sounding like a total doofus, alienating real life friends and responsibilities, then the World of Warcraft Battle Chest is for you!
Included in this handy dandy bundle are the original crack replacement, er, World of Warcraft, the expansion to the game called The Burning Crusade, a month of play time, and guide books that teach you how to play more efficiently and waste more of your time. You can currently find the battle chest for around $60-$70 retail, because Blizzard wants your money every month to pay that WoW subscription. They know that when you have all the pieces to the puzzle, all that's left is to supply the original pictures, which is in this case the suscription fee per month, which is $15. So not only do you have to buy all of the games and materials, but then you have to pay for the privilege to play online.
If you're looking to get into this game because of peer pressure or because you think that it might be cool, then this is a great way to get started. However, I would warn against it. This is a horrible deal when you think about ti.
For the uninitiated, World of Warcraft, or WoW, is an MMO that everyone and their brother is playing at the moment. You assume a fictional, mythcial character and complete quests, go on pointless raids, and level your character. No, you don't finish the game. You just keep playing and playing, trying to get the best equipment and growing your e-peen (sorry if that offends).
All in all, there is no real point to the game other than the fact that you socialize, party up with strangers, and ignorant people who have nothing better to do than scam you, make fun of you, or devote their lives to this pathetic game. The graphics are only subpar and have a painfully stupid cartoony feel. Having played the game minutely during the beta and watching videos forced upon me by others quelled my appetite. I have no desire to play this game, because nothing about it is really worth your attention. It may seem like a good idea, but really it's going to do is rob you of $15 every month, and could possibly turn you into some kind of withdrawn member of society. Something about this game turns people into mindless drones who ignore the outside world and do not know when to quit. Children have been neglected for this game, lives have been taken , and relationships have been ruined. I am very much an advocate for video games, but this is one that I have never heard anything positive about save for friends proudly proclaiming they hit the level cap or got some stupid rare equipment that I really couldn't care less about.
WoW is the heaviest-populated online game going right now, so if you decide to play then you won't be alone, but remember that if you decide to pick the battle chest up, real life will always trump video games, no matter how much they mean to you.
In my opinion, though? Run far away from this product, and avert your eyes. It honestly destroys lives. Don't believe me? Get to researching.
Summary: DO not recommend

- 23/01/09 I didn't get addicted to this too much. I was more of a fan of Guild Wars... no pressure on levelling and free to play! I love LOTRO too. |
