Advantages: Good financial advice
Disadvantages: Not independent
I have always been very happy with the financial advice Allied Dunbar give me. I have had a pension scheme with then for 5 years, initially simply being contracted out of "serps" and my pension has grown far quicker than the government one. They give you the opportunity to invest in different areas. Government stocks, the Far East, Europe etc. Some of the are low risk and some high, so it makes since to take more of a risk at the beginning. What particularly impressed me was that I recently suggested I might want to make voluntary contributions but I was advised against it for the time being. New legislation is being introduced that will force employers to provide access to a pension scheme and until I know what my employer will provide it is best to leave things as they are. This was very good advice and is an example of how Allied Dunbar seem to be genuinely concerned to do what is best for their customer.

- 11/06/01 Even though you are happy with the advice you received, how have you rated that against anything else?
As you say, Allied Dunbar are not independent, so you don't know if you recieved the best advice. If you see an IFA who fails to give you best advice you can sue him or her.
Have you considered whether the charges and commissions make them competitive relative to other companies?
For example the performance of Allied Dunbar's main pension Managed fund is at best "average" over five years and returns below average figures over 10 years relative to its peer group. The Equity fund is the same to look at just two.
Are you happy to pay your adviser a sum related to what you're investing rather than relative to the work involved?
Allied Dunbar's previously somewhat discretited sales force has certainly improved its standing in recent years and I hope that you will continue to be happy with their help in the future.
Oh yes, by the way, are all Allied Dunbar's policies the best in the market? Should you not use an IFA who could point you towards Allied Dunbar if they were the best, or someone else otherwise? |
