Advantages: Very safe

Disadvantages: Slippery and leads to loss of friction and pleasure, Hard to apply at first, needs new roll on technique, Tastes horrible

Hello and welcome to what is becoming a regular slot on the Steven Phillips condom tester page. Tonight my loving girlfriend agreed to let me test a rather annoying condom known as the 'Durex Extra Safe Condom'.

WHY I TRIED IT:

Those who have read my other two opinions on condoms will know that I have tried Ribbed (excellent) and Avanti (natural but felt too thin, like it was going to snap), so i thought I would go the opposite way today and get a think piece of rubber over it.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

I was expecting some huge bulky piece of rubber to plop out of the packet when I opened this one, I was surprised. It doesnt actually look that think, although it is slightly thicker than the Avanti when you hold it up to the light. In percentage terms it is 100% thicker than the normal condom but it doesnt look it.

APPLICATION:

Having now become a rather well practised condom user you would think I could get one on now, but with this one I had trouble. The thicker rubber may not look different but it affects the way the condom rolls down the shaft, making it all the more difficult to roll. It caused me so much trouble first time that I ended up loding my erection trying to fiddle about with the damn thing.

Having taken it off and looked at the situation carefully (undr close attention from my loving girlfriend :)), I tried again with aslightly new tactic. I unravelled the beginning of the condom for about an inch and slid it over my penis, rolling the rest gently down. This start gave it a much easier roll as the thickness didnt affect it too much.

SIZE:

I am led to believe that there are more than one size of this condom but I only saw one size on the shelf. This is the one I used (normal) and it was a little tight around the penis, although the length wasnt a problem. You need to watch out if you have a wide penis though as it was difficult enough for me and I'd say
mine wasnt that wide (although I havent studied this so cant be scientific on it).

LUBRICATION/SPERMICIDES:

This condom is safe, of that you can be sure. It has 2 types of spermicide and is twice as thick as the normal condom (reducing the chance of a split too). It's also got a lubricant on it (although I think its the spermicide that causes the problem) that makes the condom rather slippy and loses friction, not what you need when you are after a good orgasm. This is a severe let down, but then this isnt really a 'fun' condom.

SENSATION:

For me (male!!!!) it was ok although I found I did lose a little feeling due to the thickness of the condom. It wasnt as bad as I thought and it caught everything it was supposed to, didnt split and I did orgasm. My girlfriend was altogether less impressed and claimed it didnt do anything for her... so alas I had to go all over again with the ribbed, cant let the lady go without now can I? :)

PRICE:

Similar to the Avanti but more than the normal, this has more rubber and spermicides so is more expensive.

TASTE:

This was the cringe test, more on a dare than anything else but I have to give my readers the full facts right? Well, it tasted awful. Damn right, never ever ever put a condom in your mouth children. If anyone ever forces one of these into your mouth then you best jerk back fast, hopefully you'll choke and die before it hits your taste buds. Oh, I dont recommend you taste after orgasm either, thats just plain nasty.

OVERALL:

It does exactly what the name suggests, it is safe. It does lose some performance in terms of the sensation and this is a big factor for me and my partner but it all comes down to what you want. It's also a little difficult to apply (although check for sizes, I had to get the medium size) but that can be overcome.

The only advantage is that you can get 30 a month free from family planning. However, that repulsive taste must have taken a group of scientists months to perfect.

Correct in one Golly! A purchase usually made together with that of a non-petroleum based application, I do believe.
Anyway, you carry on,mate. I await your review of the German "Anti-baby Condom" (Oh, yes - there's no beating about the bush, if you'll pardon the expression, with our German cousins)
