Advantages: A good emergency form of contraception, which is safe and has no moral issues.

Disadvantages: Can only be used upto 72 hours after unprotected sex occured.

The morning after pill (or PCP), is a pill which is to be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. The pill stops a pregnancy been able to take place by either stopping an egg from been released into the uterus, or by making the walls uninhabitable.

The morning after pill is also for women who are on the contraceptive pill and have been sick and there is a possibility of a pregnancy occuring.

Unlike many think, the PCP is NOT a form of abortion, as it STOPS a pregnancy from happening in the first place, let me make this clear, if a pregnancy has already occured, this pill will NOT abort the baby.

The PCP is available from your local family planning clinic, where the morning after pill is free, or if you cannot go to a clinic for whatever reasons, the pill is also available from most Pharmasists, but you can expect to pay around £20 for it from these places...so I suggest going to your local family planning clinic, where a nurse will not only talk you through the pill properly, but will also examine you (just a basic medical examination to ensure your healthy enough for the pill to take effect!) and also discuss future family planning!

The pill is available to everybody, regardless of height, weight, size, or age. But after 72 hours after intercourse, the pill will be useless, as soon as you have had unprotected sex, you need to get the pill asap, with every passing hour, the pill becomes less and less likely to work.

The morning after pill is a combination of two pills, unlike a few years ago, the pills are now taken one after the other (they used to be taken with 12 or 24 hours in between) with food and water, if you throw up after taking the pills, you MUST go back as soon as you can and get more pills as depending on the time passed, the pills may not have had time to absorb into your system.

The pill should NOT be seen by you as "another form of contraception" as it should always be a last resort its there for emergencies, and you can only take 3 sets of the pills within a month, any more than this and they will no longer be effective for you. And so a more permanent contraception may be an option for you if you find yourself needing this pill more and more often.

I have had this pill twice now, and both times I have been happy to have taken it as unprotected sex has happened (once by accident as the condom split and once just a typical accident of none available...yes very stupid of me, and its not happened since!!). The pill has worked on both occasions, and no unwanted babies came along 9 months later!!!!!!

If you do find yourself in a predicament and have unprotected sex which your worried may lead to pregnancy, then this should be your first port of call!!!! As I say, its not an abortion as nothing has actually started to grow yet, it is just preventing a pregnancy occuring, so there are no moral issues to contend with when taking the PCP.
