Tampax Pearl Regular
Advantages: Very comfortable and easy to use. Absorbs well.
Disadvantages: Bad for the environment.
I have always avoided these tampons because I prefer to opt for Tampax's regular tampons which are a bit more environmentally friendly. I also usually go for whatever is cheapest as well and often just buy shops own brand tampons. The type of tampons that are branded as 'fancy' tend to be somewhat more expensive and in my previous experiences aren't worth the extra pennies. I ended up with a box of these Tampax Pearl tampons, however, after having a coupon which made them cheaper than my usual product. It was an offer I couldn't turn down.
These came in a box of twenty. The box looks rather similar to the Tampx Compak box though. I don't like the fact that Tampax put plastic windows in their carboard boxes. Why exactly do we need to see the tampons? It's just a bit of extra waste that isn't needed! The box comes with a helpful leaflet should you be an inexperienced tampon user. It's also helpful to read the precautions every now and then to avoid any threat of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
The tampons feel very lightweight come in a plastic wrapper. I love the way it opens. It is shaped so that it opens along the side so you don't have to tear one end of the wrapper away. I do this with regular tampons and always end up dropping the inner cardboard tube out of the tampon! The plastic wrapper has two tabs which are positioned in different places - a bit like the way a coin purse fastener is - and you pull them in opposite directions to open. The tampons also look very cute and girly and don't look too offensive - I'd be happy to open my handbag and for someone to see one of these. They might not even know they were a tampon as the wrapper makes them look more like a packet of sweets or a packet of sugar or something! The plastic does concern me from an environmental perspective though. I don't think enviromental concern is really on the radar of this brand, unfortunately.
The tampons are encased in a blue plastic contraption. The top part has a sleek rounded end which totally covers the top of the tampon and the bottom part is ultra thin and can't accidentally fall out of the top part. The bottom section is so thin that the thread coming from the tampon is kept in place too and can't dissapear into the tube. At the bottom of the top bit of the plastic sheath there is a thinner section where you can grip. This is also etched with markings so that your fingers can't slip.
I have found that these are the most comfortable tampons I've ever used. As all women will know you can feel quite tender and sore 'down there' at that time of the month and sometimes using tampons can be quite painful with all that poking and trying to get it in postition! With these Tampax Pearl's there is a fast simple entry. The plastic applicator is so smooth and it means you can move it in and out with ease. They place the tampon in the right position and you can't feel it when it is securely in place.
The shape of the tampon is different to what I'm used to. These tampons are smaller in length but wider. They expand width ways to stop leakage and Tampax say they are fitted with a 'Leakguard' braid. To my eyes the tampon looks a bit like an accordian when expanded.
Although the tampons look smaller to me but are excellent at absorbing and I have had no accidents when using them. I am totally impressed with how well they perform. I have total confidence in them. These are regular tampons so are suitable for light to medium flow periods and they've performed just as well at both ends of that spectrum for me.
Overall, I'm very impressed by these tampons. They are so easy to use and make having a period somewhat easier to cope with! As an environmentalist though I don't think my conscience would let me use these regularly because they use so much plastic. I think they would be excellent for you though if you are on the go like on a train or plane journey as they are so easy to use and store. I would give these five out of five for performance but I have to deduct a star because I don't like how much unrecyclable waste the product produces.
Summary: Performance is five star but all that plastic is a horrible sight!
