Over the moon (The Mooncup)
Member Name: Nat.
Advantages: Save money and the environment Disadvantages: Can be messy The mooncup is a useful alternative to tampons and sanitary towels. It's certainly not for everyone and it's not suitable for all situations, but in my opinion it is a more environmentally friendly and cheaper alternative to the other products out there for us girls. Basically it is a small cup, made of flexible, hypo-allergenic rubber type material. You fold it twice, and insert it into you as you would a tampon. It comes with quite a long stem which can be used to pull it out. However, you do need to trim this to the minimum you need to take it out before using it or it can become quite uncomfortable. I would recommend rinsing it before insertion, and leaving it wet, which makes it go in a bit more easily. I would also recommend taking it out by the sink so that you can immediately rinse it out. You can just wipe it over the toilet, but it gets really messy and it's more difficult to insert when dry, and tissue sticking to it could cause infection. You need to rinse or wipe it after each use, and then boil wash it at the end of each period. You can buy this for £17.50, but it then lasts forever. There are two sizes, one for those under 30 years old who haven't had children, and one for those over 30 or who have had children. It's fine to go swimming in, and I find that if you put it in at the beginning of the day, you can leave it in all day at work and then take it out and rinse it when you get home. You are much less likely to get Toxic Shock Syndrome with this product than tampons, as no foreign bodies will stay inside you like they can with tampons. You do have to become quite in touch with your body to use this. All in all, I would highly recommend it. I've had one for about 6 months now, and I'm already saving money on what I would have paid for tampons. If you want to read more about it, go to the official site- www.mooncup.co.uk. Summary: Not for everyone, but I would recommend it over tampons or sanitary towels |
