Tesco Value Rabbit Food
by Coconutter _The Product_ Tesco Value rabbit food is some of the cheapest avaliable on the market retailing for as little as £2.29 for a 2kg bag which is a fair bit cheaper than other brands such as Excel which is around £3/ £4 for a 2kg bag. Brilliant for someone on a budget? In the short run: yes, long run: probably not. It comes in a ... pretty boring bag just simply plain white cardboard with the Tesco label, a red/ white title and a picture of a bunny. Though of course when it comes to animal food the packaging really doesn't matter, especially when you are selling down the lower end of the market there is no point wasting money or fancy materials or colors and for me as an owner I couldn't really care less what it looks like as long as what's inside is good. That is pretty much where my allowance for the cheapest option ends. There is a reason this food is so cheap and it is because of the low quality, unneeded ingredients and additives used in it. My biggest problem with this food is that compared to most the other food avaliable on the market it contains some very weak ingredients and lacks some of the higher quality ones such as the use of additives to attract the rabbit, however, they are totally unessarsary and long term use could have a detrimental effect on the animal. _My Experiance_ I used the Tesco value Guinea pig and rabbits foods a handful of times in my early days of rabbit and Guinea pig ownership when I wasn't aware of the rubbish ingredients in them and can honestly say now I know I would never feed either ever again. I was totally unphased by the bag's appearance but when I opened it I was greeted by what I can only describe as "nothing special" as it honestly wasn't anything that appealing. There was a range of colours and shapes some of which were a little drained looking, the smell was also pretty average. The condition of my animals when these were used was far from healthy, poo wasn't solid and general appearance deteriated. Though they may appear cheap in the long run chances are it is going to cost you a lot more in vet bills when the effect of these foods takes place or in some cases a a much shorter life span than it should have had. It is also a mix rather than pellets meaning selective eating can occur (only certain parts of the food being eaten), this can mean your pet is loosing a vital part of their diet as well as wasting a fair amount of the bag when you have to chuck the uneaten colours away. _Summary_ Animals in general are expensive and there is no point going for the cheapest option, though pellets can rack up quite a fortune it is a lot cheaper than paying out large vet bills from a inadequate diet. For just a couple pounds more there are plenty of much better alternatives for your rabbit and will lead to a healthier life, even the other Tesco rabbit food is a little better. Dry food makes up a fair amount of a rabbits diet so it is important they are getting a good quality brand to keep them happy and healthy. I'm far from opposing of value products in general and am very happy to admit I am addicted to the Tesco Vanilla miny roles (I could eat a good couple of packs in one go) but on this occasion I can't justify going value. Though it isn't the biggest part of their diet dry food plays an important part in a rabbits diet so for me the couple of extra pounds is worth it. Thinking about it Wagg which in my opinion is a much better alternative range around the £2 mark so in general is cheaper than the Tesco food, is a much better quality and is avaliable in some of the bigger supermarkets. Tesco Value Rabbit Food
by daisylee3 My boyfriend Jack recently passed his rabbit Rosie on to me as he doesn't have enough time due to work to care for her properly (you'd be suprised how much attention rabbits need). I didn't really want a rabbit as I have 4 dogs, but as my step son is quite attatched to her I agreed to look after her until I go back to uni for his sake. ... Jack was previously feeding her a pets at home brand of rabbit food which was around the £3 mark per kg, but because i'm a cheapskate I picked up a few bags of the tesco value rabbit food as her pets at home bag of food was pretty much empty and it is cheaper and more practical to buy the food from Tesco. Each 2.2kg bag is just £2.29, working out at 11 and a half pence per 100 gram serving which seems a real bargain in my opinion and much cheaper than alot of other brands of rabbit food. The packaging is really bland - a white, sturdy, thick plastic-like bag which is white in colour with the Tesco Value logo and the product name (rabbit food) written on the front. Below this there is a picture of a white rabbit which has brown ears and brown marks on its face - it's very cute! Not much more to say about the packaging really but it is easy to open with a pair of scissors and as far as I am aware can not be recycled. I fill Rosie's bowl with it and she seems to enjoy it, rummaging around and picking out the bits she likes first. It doesn't smell of much - a little cardboardy with an undertone of something which I can't quite put my finger on, it reminds me of how a muddy field smells, lol. Visually there's not much to say, it is your average dried vegetable and cereal mix. There are cornflake type bits, mineral chunks, bits of sweetcorn (they're a bit discoloured though) and various other bits in there, nothing out of the ordinary. The food isn't very colourful and has a bit of a brown tone to it, but Rosie doesn't mind! I have heard horror stories in the past of the tesco value pet food (dog, rabbit, cat etc) causing animals to become critically ill because aparently it can block there stomach. (google it if you're curious), however Rosie is absoloutly fine with this and it's good value too. If you are buying this for your rabbit remember to include fresh veg, fruit and hay as this doesn't contain alot of protein. Also remember to keep your rabbits water topped up to ensure your rabbit can enjoy a nice refreshing drink after her/his dinner, due to how dry this food is. Read the complete review |

Tesco Hamster Food With Peanut And Sunflower Seeds
by xxfoxyredxx I am the very proud owner of four beautiful hamsters. I have three Syrians..... Trevor Arnold, Maud Fanny and Reginald Arthur and I have a gorgeous tiny Russian hamster called Eric Donald (up until recently he was a she to me and called Doris Pearl!). Their cages and food and basically everything to do with their care is ... really, really important to me. I chose to have them and its up to me to give them the happiest, healthiest life I can and I spend a fortune in my quest to achieve this (much to the horror of the people around me lol). I realised that I haven't reviewed this hamster food yet just as I spotted Maudy jumping for joy in her fresh bowl of the stuff. All my hamsters love this and its cheaper than many premium brands and the only reason I ever diverted from Pets At Home Hamster Museli that I normally get was because I was late night shopping in Tesco, realised I was running low on food for my lot and there was an offer on pet food at the time of buy any three items for the price of two so I was able to get them not only food but some much needed treats too! However I was concerned about giving them this food as all mine have these days is, like I stated earlier Hamster Muesli from Pets & Home, but I was making a saving and so thought it was very worth a trial run. The Packaging: This comes only (as far as I am aware of) in a 1kg and that comes in a black paper bag. On the front of it there is a cartoon picture of a hamster on there and some of the food is photographed and we are told that it is Tesco Hamster Food With Peanut & Sunflower Seeds and that it is 'A complete food for all hamsters, contains the right mix of protein, fibre, vitamins & minerals' and is a tasty mix for variety as well as being highly vitamin enriched, good for oral care and teeth as well as helping give a healthy coat & skin. Other information on the bag includes ingredients and a feeding guide, storage advice is given and contact details for Tescos are listed too. Nice enough bag though it isn't resealable at all but saying that, that doesn't present a problem for me as my hamsters food goes in their own cereal container to keep it fresh anyway. The Food Itself What you get is a rather colourful, dry mix of food which is simply for hamsters and no other rodent or pet. You get a hefty mixture of green pea flakes as well as wheat and maize flakes, a few peanuts (which look like monkey nuts without the shells on to me with the skin on), sunflower seeds and bits of green grass as well of pieces of dried apple chunks and grapes and of course there are a few other ingreidients in there too! What you get is a chunky mix rather than a bitty one. I hate dusty food with a passion and this looks quality to my eyes. Of course it all depends on the size of your hamster how much food you give to them. I offer the recommended food amount a day which is around 15g which they all eat this or a little more depending on their moods and of course on top of that I give treats etc. I find this to be a great food. They seem excited when it arrives, they all have their preferences...one don't rate sunflower seeds very highly the other the yellow flakes of maize but on the whole it hasn't upset their tummies or made them unhappy and they seem to enjoy picking through it and storing what they don't want lol. Not only is this food a hit with them in the taste stakes which of course is very important but I also trust this to be a healthy feed for them too. The whole bag contains 16% of protein and gives other amounts of Vitamins such as A, D3, E and some zinc and copper and I must say my hamsters have plenty of energy and are usually bright eyed and bushy taled with the yellow front teeth that all healthy hamsters should have! I wouldn't hesitate in purchasing this again in the future at all. I'm really pleased with the obvious good quality this has to it and feel that we're all happy! Nice one Tesco! Only available in Tesco stores costing £1.93 a bag. Read the complete review |
