Advantages: lots in a bag, not expensive
Initially I purchased the Rotastak yoghurt drops as a means of encouraging our new hamster to be handled as he would receive one as a treat and would therefore be receiving positive reinforcement. From memory I think that the yoghurt drops cost around 79 pence from pets at home.
The drops come in a red and silver foil pack with the product name, a picture of the yoghurt drops and a happy looking cartoon rabbit spinning a ball on his finger! We are told that the yoghurt drops are a "yummy treat for all small animals"
This product comes in a 50g bag and in my experience a bag really does last a long time as the drops are intended as a treat. The recommended amount per day is no more than five drops but I have to say I don't give Jasper more than three as a rule and he definitely doesn't get them daily!
The drops are small and white and look quite like a chocolate chip that we would have in a cake etc. I cannot detect a smell to the drops unless I stick my nail in to one and smell very closely. When I do this I can smell a faint creamy smell.
Jasper really likes these treats and will come to the bars in his cage in anticipation of receiving one! Sometimes if he is feeling greedy and hoping he will receive more than one yoghurt drop he will stuff it in to his pouch and sniff around for another one. Usually though he will hold it in his "hands" and sit up and nibble it slowly which is really cute to watch as he looks like he is definitely enjoying the treat!
We found that when we first got Jasper we could give him a yoghurt drop and then stroke him gently whilst he was eating it and I really do feel this helped him get used to having hands around him and being handled. Now he is such a softie it is unreal and he will snuggle up on the sofa with my sister and I when we are together on a Sunday and go to sleep!
I feel these treats are decent value considering how often you use them and how many are in the packet. The yoghurt drops have a best before date of a couple of years and I keep ours fresh by folding the bag over and holding it with a peg. Of course you could easily store them in a small plastic pot too.
I would certainly recommend these yoghurt drops for your small pet. Jasper loves them and has not had any bad reactions to eating them and so I will continue to use them in the future.
Thank you for reading my review!
Summary: Great for treating your hamster
