Advantages: Food packed with vitamins, variety of food in the mixture, large bag lasts for ages.
Disadvantages: Bag is not resealable, my hamster tended to only select his favourite pieces.
There are plenty of varieties of food for your hamsters bowl out there, but ever since getting my hamster ten months ago, I have stuck to Pets At Home Hamster Muesli. I found that sometimes my hamster can be quite fussy, and enjoys a bit of variety in his diet, and so by changing to a muesli, which as those who have muesli for breakfast would know, is full of a mixture of healthy food items. This helped me to realise that this product is ideal for him. A 1kg bag of food costs around £1.49. Although this is a little more expensive than other brands I have tried in the past, have a peer inside at the high quality and money is suddenly no object. Seeing as this is a Pets At Home product, the Pets At Home stores are the only places you will be able to pick this up.
This product is packaged in a pink and silver bag, which is mixed with paper and carboard to keep it reinforced. Seeing as the packaging is also very strong, this means that there should not be a danger of it ripping at the bottom. However, I was slightly disappointed that this bag is not resealable. In order to get to the food, you will have to cut open the top with a pair of scissors. In order to keep it fresh and to stop the food from escaping, I would advise to either tightly roll down the stop (I add selotape to mine to keep it defintely stuck down), or find a resealable container to store it in. The packaging is adorned with a large photograph of a cute hamster, so it is easily identifable what animal this food belongs to. For those concious on what ingredients this food contains, they are found on the back of the bag.
This Hamster Muesli combines dried fruit, such as bananas, with nuts, seeds and grains. This gives your hamster a bit of a variety at their meal times, and the tougher pieces help to keep their teeth filed down. From looking at my hamster, it appears he definitely enjoys this food, and I often see him nibbling contently on a dried banana flake, or a peanut in particular. I found that Chibi, my little hamster, like many others, is a selective and fussy eater. He tends to pick out his favourite parts of the muesli in his bowl rather than select any of it, which is a little annoying at times,as some of what he is leaving is the most beneficial to his health. Therefore in order to combat this, I try to select what I am putting in his bowl from the food bag, rather than just pour it all in randomly. Chibi then picks up anything when he realises he has already gobbled up all his favourite pieces. This food is full of a range of vitamins, which help to keep your little furry friend happy and healthy.
I was pleased that I picked up a 1kg bag, as it is of a large size, and has lasted a very long time. In fact, I am still on the same 1kg bag that I bought right at the beginning of my ownership of Chibi! He is the only syrian hamster I have, so therefore I am able to make this last a lot longer than people with more hamsters would.
So, should you buy this muesli for your hamster? Definitely! Not only has the bag lasted a very long time, my hamster absolutely loves this food. It is full of essential vitamins which will help to keep your hamster healthy and happy. There is also a lot of variety in this food, which should stop your hamster getting bored with what you are choosing to feed them. I have no doubts that your hamster will take to at least one bit of this food, but be warned-if your hamster is a bit of a selective eater, you may find that they are only picking up their favourite pieces. For instance, my hamster mainly fills his cheeks with the dried banana flakes and peanuts. If you can get your hamster to eat the majority of the pieces on offer, then this provides a healthy choice of food for them.
Summary: Very healthy food packed with vitamins, which also lasts for ages. A great choice of hamster food!
