Advantages: 'Good for my tummy and coat' A complete hamster food
Disadvantages: The packaging
I recently purchased a new Syrian hamster from Pets at Home and was advised to also purchase the Pets at Home muesli. This is the food that the store feed their hamsters on, and by keeping their diet the same it helps prevent the hamster getting an upset tummy. (Slight side note, it is advised if you want to change the food you give to your hamster you should introduce it slowly over a week or two.) Seeing as a 1kg bag of hamster muesli cost me £2.39 I figured I would keep him on the same diet of what he was used to already. This is more than some other brands, but considering the variety in the packet and that this one packet should last roughly 100 days... It's a small price to pay for keeping him healthy!
So, what is this 'variety' of tasty treats in the muesli?
There are a number of different things in the packet including dried banana flakes, peanuts, sunflower seeds, hamster pellets (containing lots of good stuff for your hamster), dried peas, wheat, maize, added minerals, as well as a number of other things that I'm sure must look like a feast to my little guy. This variety is something that isn't so prominent in other hamster food brands. I guess there is the down point that your hamster could 'pick out' the bits that they like. Fortunately my hamster seems to enjoy all of it! There is a little note on the packet that suggests if your hamster is a picky eater to try Pets at Home Hamster Nuggets instead to combat this problem.
When in the shop looking for this product, the packet is instantly identifiable. The packet is a bright pink/purple colour with the green Pets and Home logo and a cute little hamster on the front (no mistakes for what animal this food is for), clutching a teaspoon - which is also a nice indicator to roughly how much to give your hamster each day (a heaped teaspoon gives roughly the 7-12 grams recommended per day). There is a lot of useful information on the packet in a concise paragraph outlining basic hamster care.
The only real downside that I have found to this product is the bag that it comes in. It isn't resealable, which I would have thought would have been something useful to have on a product that should last approx 100 days. I have opened a corner of the packet and have to roll down the top of the bag, but being made out of the plasticky material that it is, it keeps unfolding again. Using a peg or something similar however does solve this problem. As a hamster food goes though, this is definitely one I would recommend as it provides all the things your hamster needs to keep him healthy. The variety also means that some things are harder which helps with hamsters teeth as their teeth constantly grow.
Summary: A great hamster food - contains everything a healthy hamster needs in his diet.
