Advantages: Wears teeth down, keeps Kovo occupied, tasty treat with goodness as an added extra
Disadvantages: Possibly hard to gauge how much your pet is eating in one go
I have written other reviews on hamster products, and am always buying my little Syrian little treats here and there. I have a nice little collection of various treats in his hamster box (yes, I have a box with all his stuff in). These nibble sticks are one of the things in the box.
I bought these carrot nibble sticks from Tesco, for about 75p for a packet of three. They come in a mostly red cardboard box, which has a 'window' cut out of it so you can see the bars inside. The bars are then also sealed in a plastic wrapper to keep them nice and fresh.
The treats themselves look a little bit like a cereal bar. Lots of little yummy bits of goodness all 'stuck' together. 'Packed with wholesome ingredients, Rotastak treat bars contain natural energy sources, essential carbohydrates and fibre to keep your pet in peak condition and provide a tasty treat too!'
These bars also have a little plastic hook built into them so you can attach it to the cage should you so wish - and I do do this as Kovo tends to like moving things around, and I didn't want him getting it stuck in one of the tubes that goes between levels in his cage. To get any of the individual pieces off of the bar Kovo really has to get his teeth stuck in - great for helping to keep them worn down. He doesn't seem to like the things I've put in his cage specifically for gnawing on so I have had to find other things to help wear his teeth down. these bars are one of the things I give him on occasion.
As with any treats, you have to be careful about over feeding your pet. If I have put one of these in the cage Kovo doesn't get any extra treats that I give him otherwise, such as his little hamster chocolate buttons, etc. The packaging on all the treats I've ever bought has advised on what amounts would be appropriate. As this treat is a bar I can put it in his cage and it will last a little while, a few days or so. I have also noticed that sometimes he'll bite a load of the pieces off, and then go stash them, so I always keep an eye on what he actually has in his cage, not just what is still on the plastic hook! It can be hard to gauge how much he is eating - harder than if I am counting out a set number of smaller treats. And remember, it's nice to treat your pet, but ensure that you are giving them a balanced diet and they are getting all the good stuff that they need.
I think Kovo would recommend these bars, so I will recommend them on his behalf. They contain stuff that is good for him, and give him something to gnaw on. The fact that he has to gnaw away and work to get what he wants also means that the bars are keeping him occupied. At only about 75p for a pack of three, these are also quite cheap to buy.
Summary: Great as an occasional treat
