Rotastak Nibble Sticks
Advantages: Tasty and enjoyable, can be hung up
Disadvantages: No ingredients given
I picked up a pack of these Rotastak nibble sticks last weekend with my shopping, for only 74p in Tesco. I rarely buy things like this, as I make my own treats to hang in cages and such, but I thought 'Why not?' since they were less than £1.
They come in a red and yellow cardboard box, containing 3 treat bars. The bars inside are further wrapped in a plastic bag. The box is very cute, with cartoon rodents looking very eager to get their paws on one of these bars! They are marketed for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. The box has a cut out section in the front, giving you a glimpse of the product inside. I think this is a good idea as disappointingly, there are no ingredients listed on the packaging at all. I really dislike this, as most responsible pet owners will probably want to know what they are feeding their pets. I do anyway.
The only info given is that they contain "wholesome ingredients", "natural energy sources, essential carbohydrates and fibre". They do clearly state this is a complementary pet food and should be fed as a treat only.
So, having seen the product through the cut out I was able to determine it was primarily seeds and bits of vegetable (carrot, sweetcorn, peas), all bound together with something sweet (no idea what though, and this is the main thing I am unhappy about). So I felt reasonably happy giving one to my rats and one to my hamster, but I did not give one to my dwarf hamster, as they are prone to diabetes so shouldn't be given sugary things. Since I don't know exactly what these bars contain, I am unable to make an informed decision. The bars themselves are approx 10cm x 3cmx 1.5cm and have a red plastic strip through them with a hook on the end allowing you to attach it to the cage bars. This hook is quite small though and I struggled to get it around the bars of my rat cage; the cage is very large and as such the bars are thicker. I did get there in the end though, and attaching to the hamster cage was much easier.
They certainly went down a treat. Later on the same day I put it in the rat cage, I noticed they had almost finished it! Of course, they do hoard their food so they won't be getting another one for a while, as they will have been eating bits of it for a few days afterward. They were very interested when I put it in there too, climbing up and frantically trying to get their paws around it, testing it with their teeth then, I imagine, chewing bits off and rushing to their nest to hide them. Similar behaviour was seen with the hamster, although he is housed alone so it will last him a lot longer!
To be honest, I am unsure I would freely recommend them, as the worry is that this sort of food will be fed far too often. I think without knowing full ingredients I would only use this as a very occasional treat, and stick to making things myself or using products that list ingredients. They were a very decent price though, and the 3 good sized bars should last ages if you have a single small furry to feed them to.
Summary: I would feed occasionally, with caution!
