Advantages: friendly staff, quickly processed claims, peace of mind
Disadvantages: nearly 50% rise in cost the next year, but expected (read review)
I took out more than pet insurance as soon as we bought our puppy, a cocker spaniel we called winston. Aware that vet bills can be expensive, this was a must for us. We took out the policy over the phone and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It was initially £11 per month (a small price to pay for peace of mind).
It was not long before we had to use them. Winston is a hungry dog and loves his food, so one day when he was fed (at 4 months old), he made coughing choking sound. We made sure he wasn't choking but he began to shake and salivate excessively. Panic set in and we took him to an emergency vet as it was out of hours. They did various tests and explained that he had ate his food so fast he had caused himself to vomit, then inhaled this vomit into his very small lungs, a condition called aspiration pneumonia - leaving little chance of survival due to his age. If he did survive we were told he would need physio on his chest for the rest of his life. Thank god that more than allow £7000 per illness per year. This was devastating.
After a few days of operations, medication and being on a drip, he defied the odds, and started walking. He was administered a course of antibiotics to prevent infection in the lungs and was allowed home soon after. Obviously we were in touch with more than througout the ordeal who were sympathetic throughout. We had to fork out for the treatment ourselves (which was down to he vets - not more than) which was n excess of £2000, we forwarded the invoice to more than, and received a cheque within a week for the full cost minus the excess.
Because we were expecting physio, more than sent us a handful of claims forms for the coming year and told us that the excess had already been paid for this condition and they would keep reimbursing the whole cost per treatment.
The good news is that Winston made a full recovery and did not need ANY physio or further treatment and his lung capacity is back to normal, but the reassurance that we needed just incase, was provided by more than.
He took ill 6 months later with a less serious condition - a hernia, again which could not have been dealt with better.
My renewal price per month for the next year did go up by nearly £5 per month which was the only downside, but it is still a small price to pay for the peace of mind. I would recommend more than to everyone.
Summary: peace of mind all the time
