Advantages: none

Disadvantages: look for any way not to pay

Our livery yard was burgled recently and about 15 of us lost tack. Everyone's insurer paid out except mine - Petplan. They wouldn't pay anything - a technical detail in the small print about the type of lock. No other insurers raised problems or even sent out an assessor. Since then I have heard numerous accounts from people about problems claiming from Petplan. The dog kennels I use has heard many more. A friend with a sick horse had to threaten them with solicitors to get her money. Unfortunately nobody tells you these things until you have a problem too. Insurance isn't a normal topic of conversation, but it obviously does pay to ask around and read reviews.
By the way I have also been told that Petplan won't pay out on a traffic accident unless both you AND your horse are wearing reflective clothing. Fellow riders do check this with your terms and conditions.
I have decided to cancel my insurance with them and get just public liability cover and personal accident with British Horse Society at a fraction of the cost. My Home Contents insurance may cover me for my tack so I shall give that a go. At least THEY were sympathetic on the phone!

Summary: Read reviews and ask fellow dog owners/horse riders, livery owners/kennel owners

It always pays to read the small print, with all insurers.
