Advantages: Great insurance, quick, no fuss claims

Disadvantages: None

Petplan specialises in pet insurance for domestic pets and was one of the first companies to enter the market back in 1976. One of the big differences between Petplan and many other insurance providers is that they are very active within the animal welfare community. Everything they do is still designed to help ensure a better life for the pet involved. They are pet specialists and so can concentrate on providing the best possible pet insurance.
They understand that every pet and situation is different, and so provide a range of different covers to suit both your circumstances and pocket!

I first came to know about Petplan when I got my two kittens in June/July 2007. They both came with a free 6 week trial of insurance. After the 6 weeks it was up to me to carry on the insurance if I wanted to. To be honest I have never had insurance before with any pet, but I decided to carry it on as it was cheap enough for me not to worry about (£11 per cat per month) and it gave me peace of mind that if anything did happen I would be covered.

Unfortunately, within 7 weeks of getting him one of my kittens became very ill and the vets did try everything they could think of to help him. Eventually he was referred to a specialist vet, which of course came with a hefty price tag. I would have taken him to the specialist even if I didn't have insurance, because that's what having a pet is about. The only slight downfall was that the vet required I pay for treatment before I could take my cat home. I was a bit worried that this would mean the insurance company may cause problems, or drag the claim on, however I submitted the claim to Petplan and within 2 weeks I had a cheque sent to me for the amount I had requested (minus the excess of £80). I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy the claim process was, and how it didn't affect my payments to them afterwards. Unfortunately there were a few more trips to the specialist with Dylan, and over the proceeding 6 months I spent around £2,000 on vets bills but, thankfully, because of the insurance I was covered up to a maximum of £4,000.

Not only are Petplan a great insurance company to be with, but they are also very active in the filed of charity work. They have even set up their own charity called Petplan Charitable Trust which has so far raised over £5 million.

I was quite dubious about pet insurance over a year ago, but Petplan has completely changed my attitude. Not only would they allow me to give my cats the best care if they became ill, they also give back through charity work.

I 100% recommend that people get insurance for their pets, but more than that, I wholly recommend Petplan.

Summary: PetPlan is a fantastic insurance company for pets

We got this for our kitten Clyde, he became really ill after his first jab and without it the vet bill would have been £thousands
