Advantages: Great price and easy to purchase
Disadvantages: No option to purchase annual premium and added questions as a ploy to sell you more insurance!
I changed to Tesco Pet Insurance when MoreThan's premium for my cat, Jazz, became less competitive.
The Pet:
A bit of context - Jazz is a 2 year old domestic shorthair cat. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. We have never made a claim for him under any insurance plan.
Quote and Application:
Obtaining a quote is easy enough. Just like many other insurance websites, you can get a quick no obligation quote online through Tesco's website. Tesco seems to be trying to dominate the market with almost everything these days, so their main website (www.tesco.com) is getting very crowded. You will find the Tesco's Pet Insurance under the tab "Finance & Insurance".
There is currently 20% discount on all quotes when purchased online.
The application form for the quote is very straightforward - asking very basic questions such as your general contact details, pet's name, age, purchase/donation price and details of whether your pet has been fully vaccinated and microchipped. I suspect that if you haven't had your pet fully vaccinated and microchipped the premium quote would higher for obvious reasons.
One thing I do find quite cheeky of Tesco is they ask you when your home insurance and car insurance is up for renewal - so they can spam you with quotes nearer the time, no doubt! I don't think you have the option of not telling them either - this gets a thumbs down from me.
You get your quote and you can go away and think about it, coming back letter to purchase the policy or purchase the policy then and there by a click of the mouse. Jazz's premium costs £7.24 each month.
I have noticed one difference between Tesco and MoreThan. With MoreThan I had the option of buying the premium for a whole year, paying up front. However, with Tesco, I didn't get that option - I could only pay through direct debit on a monthly basis. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I see this as a ploy to keep me longer than is necessary. I could be potentially paying the premium forever and forgetting to check for competitive quotes at the end of the year, so when joining, bear this in mind.
Clubcard Points:
The added bonus of joining the Tesco Pet Insurance policy, of course, is added clubcard points. To be honest, I don't think this makes much of a difference to my pool of points but, as Tesco says, every little counts.
Overall:
I've never made a claim so I don't know how good Tesco are when I do need to make a claim. In terms of ease of buying, very easy and in terms of competitive price, very competitive - in fact, it was the cheapest quote I could find from a company I recognised. However, without the option to purchase in one go and the added questions regarding other types of insurance, I've knocked Tesco Pet Insurance down to 3 stars.
Summary: Great price but Tesco could do better!

- 19/06/09 The only problem with Tesco and many other cheap quotes is that they do not cover a condition year on year. This is why they are cheaper. They will cover an accident which a young cat can have say on the road, that is a one off, but if he should develop diabetes or any condition which becomes chronic, at the end of that year they will no longer cover it. This is why there is so much difference between the quotes as companies like Petplan will. Just to be aware of this as my daughter is a vet and sees this heartache so often when owners do not see the differences in policy coverage. Also check the vet bills maximum limit, surgery is very costly and is the coverage enough? |

- 15/06/09 Be interesting to hear how they handle claims - of course, I hope you don't have to, but if you do, perhaps you could update? |
