Advantages: Good low cost, quick service, good policy explanation

Disadvantages: Junk mail on other insurance offers

After losing my lovely little cat, Mr Pickles nearly 2 years ago now (he died just before his 2nd birthday after being born with a twisted abdomen) I got hit for a massive vets bill because I did not have any insurance, why would I, he was young, didn't go very far and had bundles of energy, but the unthinkable happened and in a cruel twist of fate, we lost the little man and I lost a heck of a lot of money (I would pay it over again if it brought him back) but time moves on and I now have Norman, a rescue cat and at day one I got him insured with Tesco Pet Insrance.

The reason I choose Tesco was after doing a few searches on the internet and looking at comparrison websites they were working out one of the cheapest and being a known brand I felt secure using them. I applied for my insurance on line (apparantly you save 20% this way) but you are also able to tkae the insurance out over the phone.

The website is really easy to use and direct, going into www.tesco/com there is alink at the top to Tesco's insurances and then you simply scroll thorugh until you find pets. (Amongst other insurances are the usual building, contents, travel and health) You then find the type of animal which you want to Insure and click the link to get a quote.

You are asked to enter personal details (Name, address etc) followed by details of your pet such as breed, purchase price and importantly if your pet has been microchipped. Norman is chipped and this saved me a great deal on insurance as well as the fact that he is neutered and his vacinations are all up to date.

The website unfortunately asks when your home and car insurance dates are due and then when the dates come along tend to bombard you with their policy details, however other that this I am pleased with my price of pet insurance so can't really grumble!

I currently pay £5.15 a month for my insurance, not a massive amount and is keeps me safe in the knowledge that Norman is covered. You do save on your insurance if you are covering multiple pets so that is also worth thinking about.

After ordering my insurance on-line I was immediately sent a covering letter, policy details and break downs of terms and conditions. I have the 'standard' cover, you can opt for the 'extra cover' which pays more out on vets fees. My cover includes vets fees, loss or injury claims and help if your pet passes away. You do need to read the small print and it is worth making a note that teeth are not covered, expensive for my friend who's cat has just had to have dental work and 3 teeth removed.

I am lucky to say (touch wood please!) that I have not had to use the Insurance yet. Norman did have a nasty lump appear on his front leg and at one point I thought we would have to go down an exploritory route and phoned Tescos who straight away sent me a claim form but we were lucky that it cleared up without further treatment so I can not really comment any further on how the Customer service side works and if they do indeed pay out.

There is a £50.00 excess on the product, pricey but not so bad if you Vets fee could run into hundreds or thousands.

In summary, I am very pleased with the Insurance I have taken out, but hope I don't have to use it any time soon if you know wht I mean!

Summary: A cheap insurance that could mean a potential saving.

I would just point out, that you are only covered for medication for your animal for one year. So if your animal gets a condition that needs medication for longer than that, you are going to have to start coughing up your own money!
